“I hadn’t thought that at all,” he growled only because he had thought exactly that, but it had passed as soon as it entered his head. He knew he would take Aurora because all that mattered in this world right now was Luna and the safety of her and his child. Taking Adam was only a necessity because he seemed to be Aurora’s mate.

Another low growl at the remembrance of spotting Adam and Aurora together only a few days ago. Oddly, they hadn’t looked comfortable in each other’s company, but he chalked that up to everything that had come down on them the past several weeks. Everyone was twitchy these days.

“Has anyone seen that demon?” Change of subject. Aurora’s friend Lilith had vanished before they had been attacked and had not been seen since.

“No. You find that a coincidence, don’t you?”

They both stopped what they were doing to watch a couple of men haul a carpet from the hotel. Wolfe had ordered all blood cleaned up and that meant pulling rugs where necessary. Probably better for all of them, anyway. Most were so full of dirt he was surprised weeds hadn’t sprouted. It was only a matter of time before the outside made its way in.

“Don’t you?” he asked. “Seems pretty obvious to me that a demon lives in our midst, disappears, rouge arrive to kill us off and she is still nowhere to be found. I think it was all a setup.”

“Do you now?”

He spun to face the female voice behind him and found Lilith standing there, her black eyes shooting daggers at him.

“I think a lot of things about you, but trust isn’t one of them,” he responded.

“You think I would intentionally hurt Aurora?” She took a step closer, and he prepared himself for a fight.

“I have no idea what your intentions are. Everything seems all too coincidental, though.”

“I will admit things do not appear in my favor, but I don’t have to explain anything to you. I only owe Aurora an explanation, which she has been given.” She stopped a few feet away. The surrounding air swirled with a power that let him know she was not a low-level demon by any means.

“Who are you, really?” He took a step closer, his way of telling her he was not about to back down. “You’re obviously not like the other demons up here. Not even the smart ones.”

“You only need to know I will do whatever is necessary to protect Aurora.”

He laughed. “Then where was your protection when the rogue were attacking us?”

Her smile revealed an impressive set of fangs, and he wondered if she was any relation to the demon who had turned Arsenia.

“It would seem she did just fine on her own. Even managed to care for the mother of your child as well as herself. Looks like I did my job and yours.”

“I don’t like you.” His reply was as frigid as ice.

“Then I guess it is a good thing I am not here for you.” Then she turned on her black-heeled boots and strutted away.

“Something about her is off,” Xavier said. “But I can’t place my finger on it.”

“I know the feeling, and of course, you know she’s going to insist on going to Vegas and eventually Kentucky with us if Aurora goes.” The thought of having that demon tag along was like a lead weight in his gut.

“Yeah, and will we be leading trouble straight to the others? We have no idea if they are still fighting with rogue. I hate being out of touch.”

“Me too. It’s time to assemble my team and tell Luna to pack. We’re going to Vegas.” It was now or never.

CHAPTERSIXTEEN

“You arean idiot for allowing him to be with her.”

Aurora looked up from packing her backpack and gave Lilith a hard stare. “What would you have me do about it?” She shoved her arm out and shook it as if showing her friend her mating mark for the hundredth time would make any difference. “We belong to other people.”

Lilith scoffed. “Have you fucked this Adam male yet?”

The truth was, she hadn’t. Not even after he had allowed her to feed from him, which was an oddity on its own. She always had sex after feeding. She couldn’t stop thinking about Wolfe. His kiss occupied her waking thoughts, and in her sleep, they did some very dirty things. Her skin heated at the thought.

“I have not.”

Lilith smirked. “Of course, you haven’t, because he is not your mate.”
