Reaching over to caress the center of his broad chest, I see his eyes open abruptly, glowing aggressively gold.

Dax is on me faster than I can register. Snatching my hand, he rolls on top of me in one swift motion, growling like a predator defending its territory. His free hand wraps around my neck, tightening pressure points, sending stars to my vision, stealing the breath from my lungs.

Registering it’s me, Dax stops growling, and his caramel irises return at the calming of his wolf, wide with concern. I’m doused in guilt, mine and his, for managing to startle the number one apex predator out of his sleep, causing him to feel so unsafe in his own home.

“Shit, I’m sorry,” Dax rasps, removing his hand from my throat.

“No, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you.”

Dax sighs and buries his head into my face, lowering the rest of his body onto mine, causing something hard to press against my center. “I know you didn’t.”

My wolf squirms beneath him, unintentionally wiggling against his erection in delicious ways, pleasure jolting like lightning from the contact.

Unfortunately for me, commotion outside the hallway pulls Dax’s attention toward the bedroom doors.

Dax stands, turning away from the bed.

Sitting up, I ask, “Where are you going?”

Dax runs his hand over the back of his neck, his tan muscles rippling with the lift of his arm.

He opens the door, and Sam is waiting on the other side, leaning in the doorway.

Sam regards Dax with a nod, looks my way, then back at Dax. “She ready?”

“Only one way to find out.”

They study me.

After looking back and forth between them, trying to figure out what they’re up to, I finally stop on Dax. “What?”

“You’re going to start training with Sam.”

“Him?”

“That’s right.” Sam straightens, walking into our bedroom. “If you’re going to protect a kingdom someday, your little titty grab from earlier isn’t going to cut it.”

Another one of Dax’s men appears in the doorway.

“It might if they have your pepperoni nipples.” I get up from the bed.

Dax laughs, patting Sam’s back before walking to greet the man at the door.

Based on Dax’s instructions about how to warm up the pack for training, I assume he’s a warrior.

I make my way to the closet, change into active wear, then return to the bedroom and plop on the bed.

Sam stands in front of me, glaring.

My snarky demeanor doesn’t falter. It’s so easy to get under his skin.

“You know,” he says low, “it’s custom for the beta to train with the royals... Should I go find Olivia?”

I spring up from the bed to lunge at him, but before I can gouge his eyes out, a strong arm snakes around my waist, pulling me back.

Sam snickers at Dax’s intervening, knowing full well if it weren’t for his king, Sam would be dog food.

“You sure she can handle herself in a fight?” Sam instigates. “She’s quick to react on emotion.”
