Muffled swear words are all I can say to his haughty comment, with Dax’s hand covering my mouth.

“She’s my girl. Of courseshe can handle herself.”

My wolf howls at our mate’s praise.Mate believes in us.

Sam clicks his teeth. “I don’t know . . .”

I’m kicking and squirming to desperately get out of Dax’s clutches to show this beta why he’s second-in-command and not first. With all the jerking, my head accidentally makes contact with Dax’s jaw, followed by a click of his mouth closing hard.

Dax groans.

Sam made us hurt mate.My wolf’s decision on who to blame leads to her further aiding my attempt to escape our strong mate’s grasp, gnawing at Dax’s hand, tasting metal.

Goading him, Dax says, “Want me to let her go so we can find out?”

Yes, please.

Sam shakes his head fast.

“You sure? You said she was fast. I’d love to see just how fast...” Dax hums.

The wicked deviance in his gravelly voice is unmistakable.

“Oh, shit,” Sam exclaims before darting out of our bedroom and down the hall, giving him a head start.

When Sam’s footsteps hit the staircase, Dax kisses the top of my head.

“Go get him, babe.” Dax releases his hold on me.

Sprinting after Sam, I’m determined not to let our mate down.

Sam shouts when I march toward him, our mate’s laughter booming behind me.

I barrel out the front door, careful not to knock into the wait staff crossing the foyer into the kitchen, who’s cleaning up this morning’s meal for the pack. I jump down the front steps of the castle, my feet hitting the grassy field. When I sprint after him, it only takes me seconds to be right on his tail.

Pushing off my feet, I try to jump on his back but miss, my arms wrapping around his waist, accidentally pulling his pants down while tackling him. I go with it anyway, capturing his pants, leaving his butt-naked self and his dignity in the dirt where they belong.

Bolting in front of him, pedaling backward, I wave my trophy, taunting him with it.

“Hey!” Sam shouts after me, trying to decide between covering his package and where the good Goddess split him.

I give him my favorite finger before turning and darting toward the training field, where the pack will be waiting.

At the bottom of the hill, I come to a stop, in awe of the countless wolves who’ve shown up. I’ve never seen so many people gathered to train. Especially a pack as diverse as this.

The field before us is divided into training areas, arenas, and tracks designed for strength-building, agility, and fighting skills—all of which are necessary to protect all within the castle. Wolves young and old scatter about the field, younger pups stretching out on the grass as they fight sleep’s call, some failing as they wait for training to begin.

Sam’s panting and the shouting of my name halts my astonishment. I turn around to face the top of the hill, and Sam appears, covering his package. I shouldn’t be surprised when, instead of being embarrassed, he nods with a quick upward tilt of his chin at the female wolves huddling in the corner, who are snickering and whispering. Some even whistle.

I roll my eyes at their bashfulness. What do they see in him?

As I wave Sam’s shorts around, they grab his attention from the pretty she-wolves. “You called?”

Sam stops and glares at me. “Give me my shorts back!”

“Come and take them.”

I’m being childish, but he questioned my fighting skills and mentioned a certain ex of my mate, so I no longer care how I might appear to others. He’ll eat his words.
