He cringed, unsure where this was going. “What does that mean?”
“It means I’m going to make you remember what we had. It means that if you’re going to insist on making me wait until this thing with Ryan is over so we can see if that old chemistry is still there between us, then game on, because I’m going to make it hard for you to resist me.”
“Megan, it’s already hard to res—”
“Five things, Jax, but this time the tables are turned.” She winked and headed to the kitchen. “Game on,” she yelled over her shoulder, sounding absolute in her resolve.
Jax stood there dumbfounded, watching her go. If she thought he’d forgotten about the chemistry they had . . . she was out of her ever-loving mind. It wasn’t just a spark, it was a fire.
Chapter 8
PRESENT DAY
He’d finally dozed off after spending all night by the floor of her bedroom, and now someone was shaking the bed and squeaking in his ear. “Wake up, wake up, wake up, sleepy head.”
He cracked one eye open and Megan was tapping the bed. He groaned and turned his back to her. She ran to the other side, kneeled down, and pushed up one of his eyelids. “I was going to pull the blanket off, but what if you sleep naked? So I’m just going to stand here being annoying until you get up.”
“What time is it?” It felt like just minutes ago he’d laid his head on the pillow. He’d been staying with her for a week now, a week that had mostly involved working from his computer while she’d been holding meetings on Skype. Even though they were in the same house and had dinner together every night¸ they didn’t see much of each other during the day. But then the little minx would “accidentally” brush against him when they did see each other, and it almost seemed as she was dressing for the sole purpose of enticing him, with those yoga pants and tight shorts she wore all the fucking time. As the days wore on, his attraction to her intensified—but so did his resolve to keep things professional.
“Six.”
“I thought you were allergic to waking up before noon,” he teased, his eyes closed.
“Ha ha. Come on. Let’s go. Five things, remember. It starts in an hour. Get dressed, wear a bathing suit. We have to be out of here in ten minutes. I’m tired of being inside this house.”
With a groan, he finally opened his eyes. “I have a bunch of things to do, Megan.”
“Nine minutes!” she sang. She closed the door behind her, ignoring his protest. “Bathing suit!”
On autopilot he jumped out of bed and took a quick shower, wondering where the hell they were going. He didn’t feel like surprises or games, but if it made her happy and kept her agreeable to his overbearing-ness, he’d play along. Plus, she was right. They both needed to get out of the house.
Nine minutes later she was shoving a power bar into his mouth and travel mug of coffee into his hand. “For the road.”
“A wig?” He reached up and pulled the tip of her short blond hair.
“Don’t want to draw any attention.”
“Megan . . .” he warned. Yes, he was going to play along, but only so long as it passed protocol and didn’t put her in danger. Anything that required a wig didn’t sound safe.
“Come on. I’ve been cooped up in here for days. I can’t go anywhere in town because everything “leaves me vulnerable,” she said in a deep voice, impersonating him. “So I came up with an alternative. Plus, I’m with you so I’ll be okay.” The trust she had in him made his heart do weird things. “Make sure you set the alarm to the house,” she directed as he followed her into the garage and plucked the keys out of her hand.
She rolled her eyes. “Fine. I’ll let you drive.”
He laughed and opened the passenger door for her and then hopped in on the driver side. “This car is not made for a man.”
She loved her Porsche. “No, it’s not made for a giant. Take us to the airport.”
“What?” Now he was really concerned.
She threw her head back, laughing nefariously. “Just drive.” He groaned but decided to do what she asked. Things had been quiet the last week and this was so last minute, no one would know.
“I thought you were afraid of flying? Did you conquer that?”
She directed him to a private parking area specifically for private jets and they got out of the car.
“No. I still hate it, but it’s part of my everyday life now, so I’ve had no other choice but to deal. And leaving town without letting anyone know where we were going was the best plan I could come up with so that no crazy person could follow us. Genius, right?”
“Megan . . .”
