“Devlin,” she murmured.

“I’m here.”

“I’m cold.” Not surprising given she’d lost some blood and had quite the shock.

“I’ll turn off the air conditioner.”

Her eyes fluttered open. “Stay.” She licked her lips, her gaze on the floor instead of him. “Just until I fall asleep.”

This courageous, independent woman was afraid to be alone. “I can do that.” Swallowing his rage at the rogue wolf, he eased down on the bed behind her and rested his head on the same pillow. Her sweet scent filling his senses, he looped one arm around her waist and pulled her against his bigger body.

“This is nice,” she whispered.

It was better than nice. It was perfect. He closed his eyes and savored the feel of her beside him. He’d get up as soon as she fell asleep.

Devlin’s eyes snapped open. He was lying on his back, the sun streaming through the window casting everything in its yellow glow. He’d slept for hours. That wasn’t the problem. No, the problem was the woman sprawled on top of him.

Shit, he’d somehow managed to sleep through her shoving back the covers and draping herself over him like a blanket. His wolf hadn’t alerted him, either. Neither of them viewed her as a threat. That bothered him on a visceral level, but he was too damn contented to care.

One of his hands was currently resting on her lower back. The other was on her ass, his fingers splayed across the silky fabric of her underwear. Even in sleep, he was careful not to touch the place where she’d had the tetanus shot. That area was likely to be tender.

His fully erect dick was pressed against her core with a layer of fabric between them. As painful as his arousal was, he didn’t want to move. If he did, she’d wake. Then she’d move away, likely be embarrassed.

He slipped his hand beneath the hem of the shirt and up the smooth length of her spine. She gave a soft groan and nuzzled her face against his chest. His bare chest. At some point, he’d dragged his shirt off to get more comfortable. Good thing he’d left his pants on. His control was tenuous, at best.

He waited for the voice of reason to urge him to get up, to act, to begin the hunt. For once, the voice inside him was silent. The peaceful sensation he was experiencing was one he hadn’t felt in a long, long time, if ever.

The world wouldn’t wait. Their problem wouldn’t disappear, but he luxuriated in his sense of well-being. The urgency muted, for now. Again, a twinge of worry threatened to spoil the moment. Intentionally or not, Zoe, and his deepening attraction to her, was changing him.

Her skin was soft beneath his fingertips as he lightly grazed up and down her back. She hadn’t been forthcoming about the extent of her bruising. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt her. Warm puffs of her breath feathered across his chest. Her legs rested between his. They fit together easily, as though they’d slept this way a thousand times before.

His stomach growled, a reminder he hadn’t eaten in far too long. Neither had she. While rest was the best thing for her, she needed food to rebuild her strength. They also needed to talk. When his stomach rumbled for the second time, she stirred. Her eyelids fluttered open. Instead of bolting, as he’d expected, she tilted her head back so she could see him.

“I’m on top of you.” She spoke slowly, as if trying to figure out how she’d gotten here. Her hair was mussed, her eyes sleepy.

“You are.” He continued to stroke his fingers over her warm skin.

“How did that happen?”

“I have no idea. You were there when I woke.”

“Mmm, you make a nice mattress.”

She was more asleep than awake, or she likely would never have admitted to such a thing. “Glad to be of service.”

“What time is it?”

“I have no idea. I’d say lunchtime or later.” His stomach vocally agreed.

She shifted position slightly and stilled. “Ah, either there’s a wooden bat in the bed between us or you’re aroused.” Her delivery, the tongue in cheek innuendo, had a bark of laughter escaping him. Zoe continued to delight him with the unexpected.

“No bat, and nothing for you to worry about.” They were alone, and she was depending on him for protection and help. “I don’t expect anything.” It was important to him that she understood that.

She blinked, her pale eyes clearing. “What if I do?”

His hand stilled midway down her back. His dick flexed, digging into the zipper of his jeans to the point of pain. Did she mean what he thought she did?
