I knew where she was going and I had no argument. It was the same thing Trent had said when I tried to argue with him.

“Fine. Say we do enjoy one another for a bit. And if it doesn’t work out?”

“Then it doesn’t work out,” she said simply. “And if that’s the case, then at least you’ve got the experience of being with a Dom you truly cared about. One who can show you how to get in touch with yourself. You’re a natural submissive, no one is going to argue that. But somewhere along the way, you forgot what was important.”

“And what’s that?”

“Your own happiness.”

I considered that for a minute as I sipped my drink. When I turned my attention back to my friend, I noticed she was still watching me.

“I think I need to consider Chicago,” I admitted. “But not just for the job. Although, I do need to give that some serious consideration, too.” I glanced at the floor.

“I know you do. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be here right now. But I’m not gonna tell you to go. You need to make that decision on your own.”

“It’s an amazing offer,” I informed her.

“I’m sure it is because you’re an amazing person. Chatter PR Global would be lucky to have you working for them. But you do need to keep the two things separate when making a decision. You need to take the job because it’s what you want, not because it’ll put you in Trent’s path.”

I shook my head. “I wouldn’t do that. It’s a huge step. I would be leaving all my friends and family.”

“But you could come visit and we would all come visit you. It’s not like you’re moving across the world.”

True.

“What would you do?” I asked.

“I would weigh all my options,” she said with a grin. “But I’m not gonna give you enough to make this decision for you. It’s all on you, Rissa.”

I took a sip of my drink. It would be so much easier if she would simply tell me what to do.

“Clarissa, when you’re weighing the pros and cons, which I know you’re doing, I want you to think about what makes you happy. When it comes to Trent, he’s going to put you first. Despite any arguments you have along the way. Those are inevitable in a relationship.

“I know Trent,” she continued. “He’s going to take care of you. This is your chance to let go, to be who you really are, not the life-sized doll we’ve all figured out how to position to our liking. This job is your chance to start over. And Trent is your chance to explore yourself. To see what you enjoy. Go to Chicago. Make up with Trent. Enjoy yourself. And after that, you can come back and worry your little heart out about whatever it is that’s eating you up.”

I chuckled. “I thought you weren’t going to tell me to go?”

Mercedes laughed. “Yeah, well. You can’t take the Domme out of the girl, no matter how submissive she’s become.”

God, I loved this woman. She was my closest friend and I honestly didn’t know what I would do without her.

“Now that you’ve made up your mind…” she said with a grin.

“How do you know I did?”

“Because it’s written all over your face.” She reached for her glass. “And now that you have, I want you to give me all the dirty details about what happened between the three of you. It’s the least you can do, because once my husband finds out I told you to go, I’m gonna have a hard time sitting down for a few days.”

Yep. That was my best friend. The submissive Dominatrix. It was a tricky mix, but somehow, she managed to make it work.

Trent

“WE’RE GOING TO CHICAGO EARLY,” I told Troy the following morning.

I had woken early and slipped out of the bedroom while Troy was still asleep. The instant my feet hit the floor, I remembered all the things I needed to get done today, including meeting with Tristan Biggs regarding the resident Dom position. So, while Troy slept, I had called Tristan and met him at a coffee shop around the corner.

Once that business was out of the way, I headed back to the apartment to find Troy fresh out of the shower and I regretted leaving him, wishing I’d been there to enjoy him all wet and willing.

Dark brown eyes regarded me carefully. “All right. I’ll get the flight crew in place and have them file a plan. Is there anything you need before we go?” Troy asked, seemingly unfazed by my abrupt change of plans.

“No. I just need to get to Chicago.”

“Sure thing, Master.” His attention was on the iPad even as he spoke.

Heat suddenly hummed in my veins when I thought about last night. While I never expected to be able to get Troy out of my system, I hadn’t anticipated wanting him as badly as I did. Not that I was denying myself anything. In fact, I was looking forward to the next opportunity. If everything went according to plan, that would be in a few short hours when we boarded my jet for Chicago. I could think of no better way to pass the time than to spend it with him.
