Why the heck was I thinking about that?
Maybe it was easier to think about simpler times.
This had all started as a lie. He had been a barrier so my family wouldn’t worry about me.
And now, here I was, with him.
I was going to fix things with my family. I had to.
Because if I didn’t, it was going to just snowball into this horrid thing.
Because if I wasn’t at work, or with Addison and Paisley, I was with him.
And it was amazing.
And I needed to figure out exactly what it all meant.
“Girlfriend? I like it.”
Heath squeezed my hip as Dustin beamed. “Look at you, growing up. It’s wonderful to meet you, Devney. We know that you are too good for him, and we are just fine with that.”
“Be nice, or I’m going to have to kick some ass,” Heath grumbled.
“Seriously, when you finally figure out there are better people out there, come to me.”
I just shook my head, holding back a laugh at the way Heath’s eyes narrowed. “I think I am good. But thank you. Also, you have spinach in your teeth.”
Dustin grinned. “The spinach puffs are amazing. Would you like me to get you some?”
Heath growled something under his breath as Luca came over and handed Dustin a toothpick.
“Clean yourself up, bro. And stop poaching on Heath’s woman. She’s too good for the likes of you. Hell, she’s too good for all of us, but that’s why we’re going to keep her. Hidden and locked away.”
“You’re just going to lock me away?” I asked with a laugh.
“If we have to,” both Heath and Luca said at the same time, before they bumped fists.
I rolled my eyes. “Well, that’s a little scarier than I thought this conversation would go.”
“I promise not to lock you up. I may find a way to accidentally take away your keys so you’re stuck hanging out with me for a few hours, but you know, whatever.”
“I wouldn’t mind being stuck hanging out with you for a few hours,” I said, then realized how dorky that was.
Heath pulled me to the dance floor.
“I hate dancing, so let’s come out here so I can show you what moves I don’t have, but at least we can get away from the guys.”
He put a hand on the small of my back and gripped his other hand with mine.
“I’m not good at dancing.”
“Just follow me.”
“I thought you said you didn’t have any moves.”
His eyes went slightly smokey. “Oh, I might have lied.”
We moved across the dance floor gracefully, and if I wasn’t careful, I’d fall in love with him.
