“Our motto is more cult-like, so I like yours better,” Noah put in, as Ford laughed into his beer and Greer glared at both of them.
“Shush. I’m learning all these new things, and I need to know what your intentions for Devney are,” she said, hands on her hips.
I leaned forward and tapped her on the nose. “None of your business, little sister.”
“Excuse me? You three showed up and demanded to know what these two’s intentions were with me. I’m not quite sure you have a leg to stand on.”
“You know, that’s true,” Luca put in.
“So, tell us about Devney.”
I just shook my head. “We’re friends.”
“The way you two look at each other looks like more than friends.”
I sipped my water, delaying my response. “We’re just getting to know one another. I don’t think we’ve put labels on anything yet.”
“Well, I know that I was invited to a family dinner that was a big thing, but I didn’t feel ready, so you should bring Devney. We can make it a tradition. To embarrass our family members, but not embarrass the ones they bring over.” She beamed as she said it, and my heart grew, knowing that this was what she wanted, and I would do anything for her. Just like I would do anything for Devney.
When had life gotten so complicated?
“Yeah, I guess we can make it a thing.”
August whistled under his breath.
“And Devney will be the canary in the Cassidy coal mine. I like it.”
“Now, who are you dating?” I asked Luca, but Luca gestured towards the sound of kittens on the other side of the room.
“Does it really look like I have time to date?” And then I wanted to curse myself, as I remembered why Luca didn’t date, and it had nothing to do with the kittens in the next room. But thankfully, August picked up the ball and started to ask about the wedding, and we sat down to eat, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.
I sat back and breathed it all in.
We weren’t perfect. We were still figuring things out. But we were getting better.
And while I might have accidentally offered to throw Devney to the wolves. I knew she could handle it.
Though I didn’t know what I wanted her to handle.
ChapterEight
Devney
“Yes, we can totally do that. Don’t worry. You’ve got this. You’re a pro at this. Don’t worry. You’ve done this before, and we will keep doing it. Right. Right. You’ve got it.”
As I hung up, I sighed and pinched the bridge of my nose.
“So, I hear they got it?”
I jumped and looked up at Paisley, who stood in my doorway, grinning at me.
I rolled my eyes and set down my phone. “I love our clients. Truly. Even when they make me want to pull my hair out. But seriously, this woman.”
I just shook my head, and Paisley laughed.
“I know. She calls every day and asks the same questions, and you always have answers for her. And you’re always polite. And you’re right, she does have it. She can do it. And she’s been doing it.”
“I just feel really bad. I should know how to make things easier for her, and I don’t really think I can.”
