“Are you kidding me? With how many hours I work, this is literally the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

I snorted. “It isn’t even happening to you.”

Addison smiled as she leaned back in her chair. “It sure as hell feels like it. So, are you going to see him again?”

“Of course not,” I said quickly. “He was just being nice.”

My best friend raised a single brow, clearly unimpressed with my rationalization. “He kissed you. And bought you a burger.”

“The best burger of my life, but he just felt sorry for me. And I’m okay with that,” I added quickly, before she could comment. “I’m really okay with it. I’ll figure out what I want to do with my life at some point. But I’m perfectly okay not seeing him again. That way I never have to worry about the fact that I lied to my family. I’ll tell them it really didn’t work out this time.”

“Really? That’s your plan?”

I froze, that deep voice hitting me far too hard. Addison’s eyes widened as she slowly set down her coffee cup. “He’s not behind me, is he?” I asked softly.

Addison nodded dramatically, eyes widening further than I thought possible.

“Yes, Devney. I’m right behind you.”

“Like in a serial killer sense?” Addison asked before she cleared her throat and looked up at the man of my dreams and nightmares. “Hi, I’m Addison. You must be the figment of Devney’s imagination,” she said.

I flipped her off. “Really?”

“What? He’s a really hot figment of your imagination.” She looked back over my shoulder. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Devney’s best friend.”

“Hello. I’m Devney’s fake boyfriend.”

I put my hand over my face and groaned into my palms. When Addison’s phone started to buzz off the table, I looked up at her and frowned.

“Really?”

“There he goes again.”

“Trouble?” Heath asked, ever the white knight. I wanted to hate him a little bit for that, but it looked like he wanted to fix this for Addison, even though he had no idea whatitwas, just like he wanted to fix my screw-ups with my family.

And possibly my virginity.

“It’s just work. You know, the usual.” Addison drained the last of her coffee and scooped up her things. “I need to head into the office. Apparently, they can’t do anything without me.” She rolled her eyes and then held out her hand for Heath. “It’s lovely to meet you. Please don’t hurt my girl. And I want to hear all the details.” She winked at me before she headed out, leaving me alone with my not-so-fake boyfriend—and his sister. In his sister’s place of business.

I looked around for a crevice to open up and take me to hell. That would be much safer than here.

Heath took Addison’s seat across from me. “Hello there.”

“Hi. Well. I should have known I would see you when I came here, but I kind of hoped I wouldn’t, since I hadn’t seen you here before.”

Heath grinned at me and shook his head. When he rubbed his hands over his beard, I swallowed hard, wanting those hands on me. I really needed to get laid or something.

From the way his eyes darkened as he looked at me, I had a feeling he knew exactly where my mind went.

“I’m usually here a little bit later. Bartender’s hours. But I had to drop off something for Greer. She’s in the back about to take a break with her men. And then I saw you sitting here, talking about me. It was fate.”

“Or karma being cruel. I’m not quite sure which,” I said, before sipping my coffee. All I could taste was my own fear and anxiety. Was I sweating? I felt like I was sweating.

“So.”

“So.”

“You gave me your number. I was going to call you today.”
