“You know, I am going to have to disagree,” Devney said with a wink, and I put my arm around her shoulders.

“See? My girl says I’m the prettiest.”

“Oh, how cute, adorable, I can barely breathe through the beauty of it,” Luca said as he rolled his eyes. Then he looked at Addison. “You must be Addison.”

“I am. And you must be the one who’s trying to foist off kittens?”

“Do you need a kitten? I have a few. They’re loving, therefore you’d always have a friend at home.” He paused. “Unless you’d like me to be your friend at home,” he added, and Addison threw her head back and laughed.

“Is that really the line you went with?” August asked as he pushed Luca out of the way and took the seat next to Addison. Luca scooted in on the other side of him, and then we were all talking and laughing, and ended up ordering a bottle of wine, and then a second. Between the five of us, it didn’t amount to too many glasses, and we did order the sparkling water.

“No, seriously, you cannot tell me he is the best Superman. I’m sorry. There’s just no way.”

Luca glared at Addison. “Yes, he is. He is the best. The way that he personifies the character, the way that he brought through the connection of right versus wrong.”

“Did you not remember the CGI messing with his mouth? They could have just shaved his face. Or not done the re-shoots at all. It’s ridiculous.”

“Okay, you’ve got me there,” Luca said with a wince. “He’s still the best.”

“And Superman murdered someone. A lot of someones, if you include the fact that he knocked down all those buildings.”

“And, what, Batman’s all good?”

“Do not get me started on the best Batman. Michael Keaton will always be the best.”

“Didn’t that movie come out before you were born?” Devney asked, and Addison waved her off.

“So? That doesn’t mean he wasn’t the best.”

“Do you have any idea what they’re talking about?” August asked, and I shook my head.

“Sadly no.”

Addison’s eyes widened. “You don’t know who Michael Keaton is?” she asked, her voice high-pitched.

“I know who he is. I just don’t have any thoughts on my favorite Superman or Batman. I’m a Marvel guy.”

“Okay, Captain America or Iron Man?” she asked, and I sighed.

“If I say the wrong answer, are you going to forbid me from seeing Devney?”

“Honestly, maybe.”

“It’s okay, I can make my own choice. If I can fight the sibs in order to have a life, I can probably fight her. Maybe.”

Luca just sighed. “You like Iron Man, don’t you.”

“Of course, I do. He’s fighting for the wrongs that he made.”

“Yet it isn’t so cut and dry. He doesn’t truly atone for the mistakes he made, he just puts them on the other people around him.”

They continued to fight, though it sounded more playful than anything. I didn’t know if there was a connection there, beyond just friends. I wasn’t sure I could deal with Devney’s best friend and my brother dating, but it didn’t seem that was what was happening. If anything, it felt like she clicked with us. Which was good because I wanted to spend more time with Devney. It had been a while since I’d been in a relationship, and thiswasa relationship, even if we were figuring out what we wanted.

“Do we want dessert?” August asked, leaning back in his seat. “I’m still hungry.”

“You ate an entire steak, and part of Devney’s. How could you still be hungry?”

August shrugged. “I was grading papers over lunch and skipped it by accident.”
