“I will. In a minute. Once I get a drink in me.”
Before the waitress came over, I noticed a woman with long curly red hair at the bar sipping a martini by herself, gorgeous legs crossed, her stiletto heels tapping the metal pole at the bottom of the bar as a footrest.
I knew that woman.
“Paisley’s here.”
“Oh really? Tell her to come over. Unless she’s waiting on someone. I haven’t seen her in forever. You go, I’ll save the booth.”
“Okay.”
“And what do you want to drink?”
I waved and shook my head. “I don’t know. A lemon drop?”
“I can do that. Or see if there’s something on special?”
“Perfect.”
I made my way over to Paisley, wondering if I was interrupting her, but there was such a sad expression on her face, I couldn’t leave her alone.
“Paisley?” I asked, my voice soft.
She turned to me with wide eyes, before she put a fake smile on her face. “Devney! Oh wow. Small world. Big city though. I didn’t know you’d be here.”
“Addison and I are here for a drink and some appetizers. Do you want to join us?”
Paisley winced and looked around. “Well, since my date is an hour late, I’m pretty sure I just got stood up. So yes. I’d love to join you. If you don’t mind that I’m going to order a second martini right after I’m finished with this one.”
“Are you serious? He didn’t text or call or anything?”
“Nope. He didn’t. And, well, that’s just par for the course. I finally put myself out there after the divorce, and the guy doesn’t even show up.” She leaned over the bar. “I’m going to join them at my booth, can I pay my tab real quick?”
Ace smiled at me, lifting his chin, before he turned to Paisley.
“I caught the tail end of that, so your drink’s on me.”
Paisley grimaced. “I really don’t need a pity martini.”
“Tip your server well on your second one, and we’ll call it even. Seriously, the guy doesn’t deserve you.”
“He really doesn’t,” Ace’s fiancée said, and Paisley smiled, with a little brittleness attached.
“Well, thank you.”
“Good to see you, Devney. Heath should be right out.”
I blushed as Paisley raised a brow, but then I couldn’t think of anything to say. Because Heath was there, walking out, his gaze right on mine. I pressed my thighs together as Paisley cursed beneath her breath beside me.
That must have caught Heath’s attention, because he turned to her, eyes wide.
“Paisley?” he asked, the surprise in his voice nearly knocking me off my heels.
They knew each other? Wait, she had just said ex-husband. Was this him? No, that’s way too small a world. And yet, what did I know about Heath? What did I know about Paisley?
I really wanted to go back to my seat with Addison.
As if I had called to her, Addison was beside me, hand in mine as she whispered in my ear, “Everything okay? The waitress is saving our booth.”
