“I lied. I’mstilllying. I don’t like it and I need to fix it.”
“Sure. I can see that. But maybe they’ll understand if you tell themwhyyou did it.”
She looked past me into the foothills and nodded, though I wasn’t sure if I believed her. “I need to do that too.”
Then she looked at me and smiled so brightly I nearly fell to my knees. There was something about this woman that changed things and it should worry me. Because I was a gruff asshole most of the time. I had to be most of the time with my job, even when I wasn’t playing the affable bartender as I was still the boss in charge and keeping my people safe. But with her? I didn’t want to be. And that was probably a problem.
“Let’s get you home,” I said a bit gruffer than intended.
She smiled and got into the car. I closed the door behind her and leaned against the metal for a moment, taking a deep breath.
I was in trouble.
So much trouble.
ChapterSix
Devney
My body still tingled from the weekend before, and it wasn’t as if I hadn’t had a mountain of things to do since then. I had made out with Heath Cassidy in public, and there wasn’t anything fake about it. I wanted him.
Wanted him more than I probably should.
However, my life did not revolve around Heath, my loins, or the fact that I wanted him. I had a job, a career, and a family who was still worried about me, not to mention the guilt that crept into every conversation I had with them.
I would tell them. It was wrong that I hadn’t. All of my little white lies had turned into one dark lie that had changed everything. Maybe it had made something for the better, but that didn’t mean it was a smart thing to do. I needed to tell my family. I needed to be brave enough.
As if she knew I was thinking about her, my phone rang and I saw my mom’s name.
I smiled and answered quickly. Because even if she could be slightly overbearing, she wanted what’s best for me and was my mom. My everything.
“Hi, Mom.”
“Hello, baby. Are you alone?” she asked, and I barely resisted the urge to roll my eyes. She couldn’t see me since it wasn’t a video call, but I swear she always knew when I was sassing her, even through a phone. I might be in my twenties now, a full adult, but I was still her baby girl.
“I’m alone. I’m actually getting ready to go meet Addison.”
“Oh, where are you going?”
Even though the answer wouldn’t be a lie, she would probably see a little too much into it.
“I’m on my way to Lost and Found.”
“To see Heath?”
“Maybe. But it was actually Addison’s idea to go there because she wanted their special.”
“Oh, those avocado egg roll things that I heard about?”
I frowned. “How do you know about the avocado egg rolls?”
My mom cleared her throat, and I groaned.
“Please tell me that you and William didn’t go to the bar to check out Heath. It’s bad enough the five older siblings decided to make a scene about it.”
“We didn’t go. Maureen mentioned it.” She paused long enough I knew that the next blow was coming. “She and Brian went.”
I groaned again because I knew this was only the beginning.
