“Thanks for the show, but you’re kind of blocking the walkway.”

“Sorry,” Devney burst out, and I put my hand on her shoulder and nodded at the man.

“No problem. Enjoy your walk.”

“Probably not as much as you kids will,” the man said, He chuckled under his breath and walked past us, whistling a tune I didn’t recognize.

“Well,” Devney whispered under her breath. “I’m mortified.”

“I’m not. Of course, if he hadn’t shown up, we’d probably be in the bushes there, and I’d be taking care of your virginity with my bare ass in the air and rocks on my knees.”

I had probably said the wrong thing, but she burst out laughing and tugged on my hand.

“When I think about sex, the outdoors doesn’t really factor in. I mean, we could check for ticks, but I would rather not do that with your dick inside me.”

I nearly tripped over my feet at her words. “Look at you, using all the dirty words,” I said while laughing.

“I can use dirty words; I know the dirty words and I like them. Just because I haven’t had sex doesn’t mean I don’t know how to get myself off. Thank you very much.”

I groaned and adjusted myself.

“Let’s get you home. Because damn it, it’s getting hard to think.”

We stood at the car door, and she slid her hand down my chest, and even further down. When she cupped me over my jeans, I groaned.

“You’re playing with fire, baby girl.”

“Let’s go back to my place. You know, just to check for ticks.”

I groaned again and rocked in her hand.

“We could do that. If you want.”

There was a moment of silence where I swore the earth stood still, and you couldn’t even hear the wind blow through the trees.

Her answer could change everything.

“Let’s go,” she whispered.

I kissed her again, but knew it wasn’t time. Not when I could see the hesitation in her gaze. We’d started this on a dare of sorts, and that meant I’d have to step back.

I leaned back and kissed her forehead. “I wouldn’t mind kissing you for a long time yet, Devney. Then we can plan our next date.”

She licked her lips. “Yeah?”

“Yeah. Though I’m not sure if I want that one to be fake.”

She grinned and shook her head. “No, probably not. Because those kisses didn’t feel fake.” She looked down pointedly between us. “Neither does that.”

I shook my head. “Yeah, I’m going to need to take a breath or eight before I drive or I’ll run us into a ditch.”

“That would suck.” She let out a breath, that worry finally receding. “Thank you for today. I’ve had fun. It’s been a long time since I just had fun.”

I kissed her again. I couldn’t help it. “With the move and setting up the bar, honestly, same. Let’s get you home, get you fed, and we can plan the next date.”

“And I’ll figure out how to tell my family that I’m a horrible person.” She cringed as she said it and I winced for her.

“You’re not a horrible person.”
