“A child being hurt or any huge trauma like that tests a marriage.”

“Yes, it does. And it sucks. Because my parents decided that they were better off separate, but they didn’t want to keep us together.”

“They split you up?” she asked, her voice raised enough that birds flew out of the trees. She flinched, but I sighed and gripped her hand as we kept moving, mostly so that she wouldn’t trip over the rock in front of her. And because I liked touching her. I didn’t let go.

“Our dad decided to take the boys, and my mom took Greer. And we moved a lot. Greer moved more than us, Mom always going from job to job.”

“They parent-trapped you?” she asked, her voice so aghast, I just squeezed her hand.

“Pretty much. And then they got married again.”

“And you got to live with your baby sister.”

“Yep. For a few years. At least until we hit high school, and then they got divorced again.”

“And they split you up again.”

“Yep. Mom took her away, and they made it so we couldn’t even contact each other. We tried to email and call, but the guilt from the other parent when we got caught was too much. And it got weird. Greer was our baby sister, but we rarely saw her, and we didn’t get to know her. I didn’t get to growl at her first boyfriend or watch her get ready for prom. I didn’t get to help her learn how to drive, I didn’t get to do any of that.”

“But she has you now. I mean, you moved out here for her, right?”

I nodded. “Our parents are on marriage three, and on a honeymoon around the world that should take at least another year, thank God.” I rolled my eyes as I said it.

We came to the bluff. It was gorgeous, the trees parting so you could see the edge of the cliff and a small stream trickling through.

She pulled out her phone to take a photo.

“Enough about me and my sad story.”

“One more thing on it though.” She looked up at me and smiled. I swallowed hard, reminding myself this was just a fake date.

“You’re here now for her. You’re here with all of your family. And in the end, that’s the only thing that matters.”

I pushed her hair back from her face before I took her phone from her hand.

“Yeah. That’s part of it.” Then I leaned down and kissed her, snapping a selfie before she could say anything.

She laughed as she pulled away and took the phone back from me.

“How did you center us so you could see the background so wonderfully?”

“Pure luck,” I said with a laugh, then looked down at the photo. You could see the mountains in the background, the trees surrounding the frame, my lips on Devney’s in the center.

Cheesy as fuck, but damn if it didn’t make me smile.

We kept on hiking, and we decided to no longer discuss anything too heavy. I hadn’t even meant to bring up my family, or the fact that I’d been sick as a kid. I didn’t like thinking about my parents. All I wanted to think about was the family that was here now. They were the ones that mattered.

We made our way to the end of the trail, and Devney was panting a bit, her chest rising up and down, so I did my best not to stare at her nipples through her shirt. But it wasn’t easy. Especially when she pushed her hair back from her face, pressing her breasts against my arm.

I leaned down and trailed my finger along her collarbone.

Her lips parted and she sucked in a breath before I leaned down to take her mouth again.

“Let’s get you some water. You look parched.”

“Oh?” she asked, before she wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled me closer. I wrapped my arms around her waist, pressing her body against mine. She was soft and supple and I wanted to take those shorts off and see exactly how she felt against me. The kiss deepened and she groaned. I rocked against her and realized that I was hard as fuck, pressing my dick against her stomach.

She panted as I slid my hand into her hair, tugging gently. She moaned, and I deepened the kiss before someone cleared their throat behind me. I cursed, backing away. Thankfully, Devney stood in front of me, blocking my erection, as a man with a walking stick, large backpack, and wide grin looked at us.
