“Fine. Fine. Sending it to your email now.”
I don’t even bother with a response. Instead, I hang up the phone and jog down the stairs to hop on the subway before I end up late to work because my sister is a freaking psycho.
By the time my inbox chimes with a new email from Brooke, I’m walking into La Croisette with five minutes to spare.
I don’t waste any time, heading into the back office to download the latest and greatest from Brooke Baker, plopping into the leather desk chair as I do. The instant my download is complete, my Kindle is locked and loaded withCluelessly Yours.
When I open up the first page, the dedication sits front and center.
“To the love story of my sister Sammy Baker-Philips and my brother-in-law Dr. Noah Philips.”
And I can’t decide if I should laugh or cry. Sure, she may’ve changed thecharacter names in the book, but the freaking dedication may as well include my home address and social security number!
My sister, ladies and gentlemen, don’t let her know too much about your life, or her crazy-writer ass will put you in one of her books…withoutyour permission.
I only make it ten pages intoSara and Nolan’slove story before I realize a few things:
Number one: My sister is an amazing writer.
Number two: Sara and Nolan’s love story already has me hooked, and I lived it.
And number three: I’m about to rock my sister’s world with a payback.
Phone to my ear, I hear Brooke answer on the first ring, and I instantly know she’s been expecting this call.
“Are you mad?” They’re the first words out of her mouth.
“Just tell me one thing. When does it publish?”
“In two weeks.”
“So, it’s too late to change anything?”
“Yeah…” She pauses, and I smile.
“Oh, that’s too bad because you don’t have the full story.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’m pregnant.”
“What?”she questions on a shout.
“I said, I’m pregnant, Brooke,” I tell her again and run a hand over my belly. “A little over eight weeks along. Looks like you’re not the only one who is good at keeping secrets.”
“Sammy! I swear on everything, you better not be lying to me right now!”
“Oh, I’m not lying. But I do have to go. Love you!”
“Sammy! Sam—”
Then, I hang up the phone.
And the smile that consumes my face? Well, it’s equal parts I-just-one-upped-my-sister and I’m-pregnant-with-Noah-Philips’s-baby.
Hey, universe! How’s that for a happily ever after?
