“Baby, tell me, you're worrying me.”

I take a deep breath; I rub my stomach feeling the butterflies. I don’t know how he’s going to take the news. “Okay, I…”

“For fuck’s sake, spit it out. Are you hurt, dying, or what?”

“No Jesus. Let me tell you. You’re going to be pissed.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I invited my dad and his girlfriend over for supper.” I’m breathing heavily, waiting for him to answer me. He’s sitting here with a blank look on his face. “Talk to me, please.”

He twists his ring around. He rumpled his brown hair with a large hand, glancing me in the eyes. “Charlie. I thought you had other news to tell me, like you were dying on me. Your dad is nothing I can’t handle. We’ve settled our differences months ago. I’m sure we can be civil for a while for dinner.”

My shoulders relax. “Thank God. I didn’t know if you would be angry at me for not asking first. He called and wanted to celebrate his recovery. I didn’t have the heart to say no. He really wants a chance to get to know Ada. I would like that too.”

“I would love that; she is going to love your dad. You never know maybe she’ll take after him and become a cop.”

“You would want that? A cop in the family?”

He hitches a shoulder. “We have a lawyer. Why not a cop? We can use all the help we can get.”

“She would make one badass cop, that’s for sure.”

“Well, I am her father, after all.”

Yes, he is, one badass mafia man. I can’t believe I found him again after all these years. I got extremely lucky somehow. I went from being unbroken to his mafia queen.

I’ll never look back.
