"Are you effing serious?" she finally bursts out, her incredulity written all over her face.

I can't help but grin, amused by the bombshell I've just dropped into her lap. "Dead serious," I confirm with a nod.

She stares at me for a moment, the gears clearly turning in her head, and then it starts—a torrent of reasons why my proposal is the worst idea she’s ever heard.

“Dom, are you hearing yourself? This is crazy,” she begins, her hands gesturing with every point she ticks off. “It’s completely unconventional. Do you know how things like this can spin out of control? And the risks—what if this backfires? Our reputations, the team's integrity, the media circus it could become...”

She pauses for a breath, and I'm bracing for the knockout punch.

“And let's not ignore the elephant in the room—you're a jerk, Dom. A charming jerk on your best day, but still a jerk. You're asking me to pretend to be in love with a man who's made half my professional life a battlefield.”

Her words are like slapshots, fast and hard, each one hitting its mark. I can't deny she's got valid points; it's a wild idea, a gamble that could very well end up in the penalty box.

But as she lays out all the reasons why we shouldn’t, I’m already thinking of all the ways we could make it work. Because that’s what I do—I turn the impossible into the possible.

I lean back, my grin never fading. "I can be nice when I want to be," I say, a subtle reminder of that one night when 'nice' was a gross understatement. "You, of all people, should know that."

She scoffs, her eyes rolling in a way that would have been comical if we were discussing anything less than a fake engagement. "Please," she retorts, but there's a hint of pink on her cheeks that wasn't there before.

I observe her, noting the lack of immediate rejection. "You're considering it," I point out. "Otherwise, you would've stormed out by now."

She doesn't answer, but her silence is as telling as a shout.

Rising from my chair, I straighten the lines of my jacket, an outward echo of the internal attempt to straighten my thoughts.

"Take your time," I say, my tone serious, stripped of its earlier amusement, all traces of jest gone. "Mull it over. Weigh the prospects for the StarPucks, the opportunities that Apex Stadium access could open up. It's a temporary play, Isabella, but the rewards could be significant."

Isabella remains still, her posture a study in contemplation, her fingertips lightly circling the rim of her wine glass. The intensity of her silence speaks volumes; the wheels are turning, the strategist in her mapping out the vast, uncharted territories this arrangement could navigate.

As I watch her for a moment longer, I acknowledge the weight of the situation I've placed on her shoulders. It's a bold move, a deviation from the playbook, but then, that's always been my style.

With a nod, firm and decisive, I turn and walk away, leaving her with the space to deliberate a decision that could very well change the game for both of us.

Thecity'srhythmfiltersthrough the windows of my apartment, a steady thrum that matches the racing of my thoughts. I'm pacing the length of my living room, the cool hardwood beneath my feet grounding me as I replay the meeting with Dom. His proposal hangs in my mind, audacious and cunning.

A fake engagement. The words taste like a risky play, but I can't ignore the allure of what he's offering—the exposure, the resources, the undeniable leap forward it would mean for the StarPucks.

With access to the Apex Arena, we'd be stepping into a whole new realm of possibilities. The Apex is designed to be more than just a state-of-the-art facility; it’ll a symbol of prestige and progress in the hockey world.

Firstly, the arena boasts cutting-edge training facilities. We're talking high-tech gym equipment tailored for hockey players, advanced rehabilitation centers with the latest in sports medicine technology, and ice rinks equipped with elite performance tracking systems. For a team like the StarPucks, this means access to resources usually reserved for the top-tier teams.

Secondly, the location of Apex itself is a strategic advantage. Nestled in a high-traffic area downtown, it guarantees larger audience attendance and greater media coverage. This exposure would be invaluable, offering the StarPucks an opportunity to build a stronger fan base and attract significant sponsorships, both of which are crucial for a growing team.

Moreover, the player amenities are slated to be second to none. Luxurious locker rooms, state-of-the-art video analysis rooms, and spaces designed for optimal rest and recovery. These are factors that not only boost player morale but also contribute to better on-field performance.

Additionally, hosting games at Apex would mean a significant increase in revenue. The arena is a magnet for vendors and high-paying advertisers, which translates to more funds for the team—funds that can be reinvested in player development, scouting, and other critical areas.

As I consider all these factors, it's clear that gaining access to Dom’s new arena would propel the StarPucks into the upper echelons of the league. It's an opportunity to accelerate our growth, to challenge the bigger teams on a more equal footing.

But it's a deal with the devil. And not just any devil—Dom Steele, the man who’s as infuriating as he is... no, I won't go there.

I stop at the window, watching the city lights dance like fireflies caught in an urban jar. This is more than a business decision; it's a moral conundrum. Can I really entangle myself in this web of pretense? Is the potential success worth the charade?

My mind is a warzone, strategy and instinct locked in a fierce duel. I've always played by the rules, climbed the ladder rung by painstaking rung. But this? This is uncharted territory, a shortcut that's as tempting as it is treacherous.
