“What are you going to do?” Techy taunts, grabbing the third wheel of the trio. Stephan trips over himself as he’s now forced to stand. Locking an arm around the man’s throat, Techy pins his front to Stephan’s back. “Shoot her?”
“Damn right,” Ravi snaps. He jumps forward, but Charles holds an arm up to stop him.
“You shoot her, you lose income. Let me go,” he snaps. I attempt to look up at Techy, but my neck doesn’t tweak that way. Biting my lip, I keep from screaming at them all.
Nomad once told me that they’d do anything for me. Keep me safe, and if anything ever happened, they’d do everything in their power to return me to them.
Sitting here right now, it’s hard to believe that anything he said was true.
“How do we know that you’re not going to bring back the mob? Get your revenge?” I can’t help fissure that tears in my heart. It tightens painfully, and I jolt without warning. A boot lands on my head, keeping me from trying to move again. I grit my teeth, forcing myself to stay silent.
“You think we cared about her?” Techy scoffs. I assume from the sounds of choking that Stephan is still in a head-lock.
I want nothing more than to believe Nomad’s words. There’s so much more to it than this. His words ring through my head over and over again.
Just more people who made promises they couldn’t keep.
“She was just a time sake. Honestly, we lost interest when she wouldn’t put out,” he laughs, though it’s strained. The slight crack gives me just a tinge of hope.
“Oh, we’re familiar,” the three goons cackle. Wouldn’t it be stupid to compare them to that wicked witch? “That’s why we force it. She doesn’t know what she wants, we just have to give her a littlenudgein the right direction.” The boot lifts as a hand weaves through my tangles. Jerking backward, my neck strains with the effort to stop from snapping in half.
“Unfortunately for her, we can’t keep her much longer,” Ravi sighs, dragging a blade down my throat. “She’s been causing far too much trouble.”
“We did the ‘get to know her’ method. You could’ve tried that,” Techy suggests, meeting my eyes. There’s several emotions that cross through them, but I can’t read into any of it.
Fog covers my eyes as my brain spins. The loss of blood seems to be catching up. There’s suddenly a double in the men in front of me, and the only thing keeping me upright is the hold on my hair.
Blinking gets slower as white dots invalid my vision.
Chapter Twenty-Two
Pacingthefloor, wewait for an update on Techy. About an hour ago I got an odd call from an unknown number, one that I was baffled to have gotten. It was elusive and pretty perverse, but I wasn’t going to question it. They said they were bringing him back to me. That’s all I care about right now.
“Where are they dropping him?” Hudson asks, parking himself in the chair next to mine. The one I occupied for I decided there’s too much pent up energy for me to stay put.
“They didn’t say,” I start, running my hands through my hair.
“I’ve got a tracker on him,” Robo calls, his fingers fly across the keyboard as numbers shoot onto the screen. A little red dot dances around. “The call was long enough for me to get the intel. I’m sending the coordinates to you now, it should allow you to monitor his movement as you go.” Phones ding around the room, several members pulling their devices out for the tracking.
“We need to be there when they drop him off,” I warn as eyes land on me. “We also can’t be seen. If I got the message correct, we’re already on thin ice.”
It took me about ten minutes to realize that Techy’s speech was actually a code. When I saw it was from him, I immediately knew to record the conversation. Widower and I played it over and over again, debating if there was anything to even get from it. Then, Robo and Appa came into the room, heard the ques and started drilling into it.
Don’t ask me how they did it because I’m definitely not the smart husband in our marriage. The two nerds worked for only five minutes before deciphering the message.
“Aspen alive, here, underground,” they agreed. How’d they celebrate their victory? By tracking Techy’s phone to the place where they–hopefully–kept them hostage. By hopefully, I mean that we need to find Aspen.
Fast.
I’m first to volunteer on the rescue mission and a few other executioners join. Crusher volunteers as well, but Widower winks at him and holds him back. Something about coming up with a game plan. At this rate, I honestly don’t give a rat's ass.
I just want my husband back.
The dirt lot is practically ice as we pile out of the club, but we were sure to salt the main areas. Thankfully, the road crews are diligent about maintaining roads around here. “You all got it pulled up?” I call out, the roar of machines cutting out my voice. Several thumbs up, and we’re ready to ride.
Turning the key over, I flip the switch. My beast vibrates in happiness underneath me, purring as I kick up the stand and take off. A slight fish-tail onto the road, then I open the throttle.
“Com-over,” Robo calls over the gearset, startling me slightly. With an over exaggerated eye roll, I respond.
