They sought out help for me. Gave me a home and asked nothing in return.

I was a coward to think that they were dangerous now that I’m staring right back at my past.

“We lost her.” No sooner than I can bring myself to the present, a white hot burn cascades from my rib cage. These assholes only prey on my sounds, the screams of pure torture and agony. So, I stay mute. When I sat down with Nomad once, he explained why I was being preyed on. Maybe not the official reason, but he gave really good points as to why they may have kept at it so long.

“Being involved with the club can be…complicated,” he suggests, avoiding eye contact. Narrowing my eyes, I withhold the urge to swat at him.

“And?” I drag. My elbows drop onto the table with a clatter, startling him.

“And nothing,” he mutters as he swings back his beer. “Nothing, I don’t know why I said that.”

“The fuck you don’t,” I snap before I can catch myself. Covering my mouth quickly, my eyes get as wide as saucers. “Shit, I didn’t-it’s not-fuck, I’m not-”

He booms out in laughter, shaking his head. “Cobra, it’s fine,” he chuckles, resting his hand on mine.

“Cobra?”

“Cobra’s are significant to death and rebirth, depending. We’ve decided that your club name will be Cobra.”

“I have a club name?” I wonder as my heart picks up speed. “Wait, you’re trying to get me off track!” His hands fly up in surrender while he tries to pass off a look of innocence. The look isn’t working.

“No clue what you’re talking about.”

“Just tell me,” I grunt, my nerves starting to grate.

“Well, for one, when you plead for them to stop, most sickos like to hear it when their victims are begging for mercy. Did you do that?”

A shudder racks down my spine as I recall briefly and nod.

“Yeah, that’ll do it. Also, they just like to hear when you cry and scream.” I open my mouth. “Don’t ask questions you don’t want the answers to.” My mouth rightfully closes.

“So, you’re saying that I was in captivity for so long because I begged?” I ask skeptically.

“Not necessarily, but it probably didn’t help anything.”

“Well,” I state, crossing my arms over my chest. “If it ever happens again, knock on wood, I’ll be sure to be as silent as humanly possible.”

“Fucking whore!” He screams, a blunt force smashing into my stomach. I gasp for air as I’m yanked from my vision. Even struggling to breathe, I refuse to make too much noise. Only as much as I need, nothing more.

“She got some confidence,” Charles snarls, his lip twisting animalistically. “We’ll have to fuck that right back out of her.”

The first thought in my head is to scream and plead with them to stop. For them to just leave me alone, that I’m useless to them. But, as I refer back to the talk I had with Nomad, I decide that they can do whatever they fucking want.

Once I’m free, I’ll ensure that they never see the light of day again. Then, I’ll make sure Nomad and Techy know exactly how I feel. I can’t imagine dying without at least being able to say goodbye.

Chapter Nineteen

Boundingbackintotheclub area, there’s no one here. I look around, not seeing any traces of people. Looking down at my watch, it’s just after midnight. Have Widower and I been downstairs that long? Not only that, but it’s usually pretty busy this time around. There are three teams currently on runs. Either way, it’s neverempty.

I try calling Techy again with no luck. Finally, I call Hudson who answers on the first ring.

“Jesus fucking Christ,” he growls, surprising me. “I’ve been trying to get a hold of you guys forhours. What the fuck?” And one of the bosses is not happy. Oops.

“Widower and I got stuck in the clinic. Doc and Heallie were roped up. Heallie might have some other profound injuries, it’s unclear right now. I came looking for you guys because the lines weren’t working downstairs.”

“Techy went looking for you guys a couple hours ago,” he states, agitation clear in his voice. “If you both would have looked at your phones, you’d have seen that I sent out an email to the members because I was concerned. He was supposed to call in by now.”

“What do you mean, call in?” I ask, running a hand through my hair. Sitting on the barstool, I lean over it with a heavy sigh. Shit just got real.
