And they were like, ‘No probs. All we want is for you to keep doing what you’re doing right now on Twitter. Just in longer-format, for a bigger platform. Sounds good, right?’
So it did sound good.
It sounded like more signal boosting — writing about protests, taking pictures, getting the word out about stuff that mattered. (My profile on Twitter had grown a bit from my viral tweet, but not as much as you’d think. I still had fewer than 2.5K followers.) It sounded perfect11.
Mistakes were made. Things happened.
I kind of … had a breakdown12.
I don’t want to talk about it.
Bottom line: I work somewhere else now. At Citidaze. Not somewhere better, but at least I have a job.
Things could be worse.
Speaking of worse, my phone is still buzzing like crazy.
Gray: Lex, hello? The text?
Of course … he’s not giving up. When the rest of the Madison kids discussed this last, I did agree to do it.
Hmm. What to say?
Lex: Nearly, but not quite finished. Sorry, but I don’t want to give them the video tonight anyway. Not in front of the cameras.
Gray: Lex.
Lex: Gray.
Gray: IDC, I just thought we agreed?
I quickly pop away from my one-on-one with Gray and into one of the Madison kids group chats, sans Claire (we have so many chats going — so we can talk about each other — it is a dangerous game).
Lex: Sorry sibs. I have not finished the text for the video gift. In my own defense, I just don’t think this event is the right venue for it anyway.
Gray: That’s fine, but I thought we agreed???
Diana: We did agree, but I must say, that decision hasn’t been sitting well with me. I’m sure it was incorrect.
Bex: Did we even agree? When? I don’t remember agreeing.
Trusty Bex. She definitely remembers, she’s just trying to help me out. The girl would back me up in literally any situation. Like, if I were standing in a pool of blood, holding a murder weapon, with a body at my feet, and the police burst in and saw the whole scene, if Bex was there, she would probably shout out “It was me!” before they even had the cuffs out.
It’s a twin thing. Or maybe it’s just a Bex thing. Ride or die, like I said13.
Diana: I’ll remind you all that the invitation to this shower said “your presence, but no presents”. Have just looked back to confirm. We discussed the idea of waiting until her birthday instead.
Gray: Right, but the baby may be born by then. Isn’t her due date at the end of September?
Diana: The due date is October 4th.
Bex: Due dates are just guesses.
Diana: Yes, only correct a tiny percentage of the time. Four percent, I believe. Very strange behavior on the part of the medical community to present them with such confidence. Regardless.
Gray: Also, she’s our sister No one really means it when they say “no gifts”. Not with family.
Diana: Disagree. That is illogical. Why would she have said it if she did not mean it? Rather, why would she have had it printed on the invitations? Use your head.
