“For?” My tone is abrupt as I’m trying to comprehend why the two of them are here right now.

Why isn’t Ellie with her?

“The three of us were going to brunch,” Tristan speaks, “So this one can finally stop making me sneak around like I’m her secret Casanova.”

“You text her this morning,” my gaze bores through Lyla, “Nine one one. That the two of you had split up.”

“No, I didn’t,” she looks up at Tristan, “I don’t even have my phone. I lost it somewhere yesterday. I was planning to go and get a new one today.”

Ellie.

Piccolo fiore.

I cannot survive losing another great love of my life.

My heart is pounding in my chest as my feet carry me to my office. Grabbing my phone from my desk, I call Ellie.

Voicemail.

My fingers fumbling against the screen, I call Paolo.

Fucking voicemail.

Grabbing the pistol from my desk and shoving it into the back of my pants, I storm toward the front door.

“Give me your keys,” I hold my hand out to Tristan as I approach.

“Sal?” He questions me.

“Give me your fucking keys, Tristan,” the rage building inside of me explodes. Tristan promptly pulls his keys from his pocket and places them in my hand.

Quickly traversing the steps, I slide into Tristan’s Alfa Romeo. The engine roaring and tires squealing, I race down the driveway. The front gate scraping against the passenger door as I drive through before it fully opens. Fishtailing as I turn onto the city street, I speed through the city to Lyla’s apartment.

Please be there.

I can’t lose you.

My phone buzzes in my pocket.Lorenzo.

My exit in Tristan’s car must’ve have garnered everyone’s attention.

Lifting the phone from my pocket and pulling my attention from the road, I read his text.

LORENZO

Let us help you Papa.

I will not risk your lives for her. I can’t

You would do the same for us

You are my sons. I would do anything for you.

Sending the text, I drop the phone on the front seat of the car.

I know they would do anything for me.

But as much as I cannot fathom losing Ellie, I would never be able to live with myself if I were the reason one of them lost their lives.
