My heart begins to race when I see the dots of her response pop up on the phone.

ELLIE

I am SO sorry Ly

Just seeing this

I am on my way

Dropping a twenty on the table and leaving the phone, I stand from the booth. Hands shoved in my pockets, I quickly make my way to Lyla’s building and let myself into her apartment.

Again, cavalier with her safety.

No doorman.

No deadbolt.

She might as well have left the door open for me.

Watching out the window of the second-floor apartment, I recognize Paolo when he steps from the car.

Fucking predictable, Sal.

He opens the rear door of the car, and Ellie slides out. The sun radiates through the golden hue of her hair. She looks like a fucking angel.

So fucking perfect.

She exchanges words with Paolo and he returns to the car and pulls away as she walks into the building. Tucking my gun into the back of my pants, I sit on the couch and wait for Ellie.

ChapterForty-Two

ELLIE

My hand knocks against Lyla’s apartment door. When she doesn’t answer, I fish her spare key from my purse and let myself in.

“Babe. Get out of bed,” I yell to her as I step inside and turn my back to the apartment and relock the door behind me, “I begged Paolo to go get us some coffee and he should be back with it shortly.”

Turning around, I scream when I see Angelo sitting on the couch.

“Please,” his voice is soft and pleading, “I just wanted to talk.”

“Where is Lyla?” I immediately worry that he might have done something to her.

“She’s not here,” he calmly reassures me. “I begged for her help. I just needed to talk to you.”

“There isn’t anything to talk about, Angelo,” I shake my head.

“Please, Ellie,” he stands from the couch with tears welling in his eyes. “Please.”

“I’m sorry, Angelo, truly. But I made my choice.”

“What do I need to do, Ellie?” He walks closer, a tear rolls down his cheek, “You have my heart, beautiful. I would do anything for you.”

“Miss,” Paolo’s voice calls from the other side of the door as he knocks, “I have your coffees.”

Reaching past me, Angelo unlocks the door to let Paolo in. His hands full with coffees, Paolo steps into the apartment and sees Angelo. The disposable cups falling to the floor, he is unable to react fast enough when Angelo lunges at him.

Screaming, I watch in horror as Angelo wraps his arms around Paolo’s neck. With a swift movement, he breaks his neck and drops his limp body to the floor before pushing the door to the apartment shut.
