If he can’t feel it, he undoubtedly can hear it over the deafening silence.
Leaning down and closing what little distance there is between us, he presses his forehead against mine. With his breaths expelling against my face, I can feel them rapidly growing deeper and faster as they match my own.
“Sal,” his name trembles over my lips as my forehead gently rolls against his. Both of us obviously fighting against the urge to close what little distance there is between us.
His hand grips my jaw moments before his thumb swipes over my parted lips. My tongue slowly presses between my open lips, and as though he knows I want more from him he pushes his thumb into my mouth. Holding it still on my tongue, my lips close around it.
“Piccolo fiore,” he groans when I gently rub my tongue along the rough pad of his thumb as he pulls it from my mouth. Still held tight against him, I can feel him growing hard against me. His thumb slowly drags down my chin. His voice pained, “There are a million reasons why we shouldn’t. Why we can’t. We both know it.”
“I know,” my words barely a whisper.
“I’m not a good man, Ellie.”
“I don’t care.”
“You would,” he releases his hold around my waist but stays pressed against me, “The things I like. The things I would want to do with you…to you. I would destroy a sweet little girl like you.”
“Sal...” I whimper and swallow hard not knowing what else to say.
He steps back from me and the look of desire on his face quickly dissipates. Even his tone is more rigid when he speaks again, “I have to go to Florence with Giancarlo for some business. I’ll be gone for a few days.”
His change in demeanor throws me and I struggle to speak, “Can we talk about this when you get back?”
“We’ve talked about it, Ellie,” his voice deep and flat, “There isn’t anything else to say. Try not to break anymore glass while I am away.”
Stepping around me, he walks out of the house and I am flooded with an array of emotions.
How is it possible to feel like I just got dumped when nothing has ever actually happened between us?
ChapterFourteen
ANGELO
Driving back from taking Sal to the airport, I swing by my apartment to shower and change for my date with Ellie. I had planned on taking her out this evening, but with the boss out of town we have the entire estate to ourselves. Making my way back across the city, I make pitstops at a few stores on my way.
Pulling through the gates, I make my way up the driveway and park the car in the garage. After filling my arms with my purchases from the backseat, I let myself in the front door of the house. I only make it a few steps into the foyer before changing my mind.
Walking back out onto the porch, I quietly pull the door shut behind me and ring the bell. The echo of its melody can be heard from where I stand.
I guess a house this big, it has to be pretty loud.
“Angelo,” a slow smile spreads across Ellie’s face when she opens the door and takes the bouquet of roses from me, “They’re lovely.”
She backs up allowing me room to step inside. Bending down to kiss her, I’m surprised when she slightly turns her head and my lips meet the corner of her mouth.
“What’s wrong, beautiful?”
She purses her lips and hesitates for a moment, “Just a long day.”
There’s more to it than that.
“Do you mind if we stay in instead of going out?” she timidly asks.
“It’s like you read my mind,” I lift the bags in my hand, “I brought a late dinner and a couple of movies.”
Ellie takes the bag with DVDs into the living room while I carry the food to the kitchen. She slides up next to me as I pull plates from the cabinet. Pressing up onto her toes, she places a kiss against my jaw.
“I’m sorry,” her voice is quiet as lowers herself back to the ground.
