“And then he could say, ‘Paige Moss, will you marry me?’”
Her eyes went impossibly large. “You mean as a hypothetical.”
He shook his head. “I do not.”
Paige looked around, seeming bewildered. “Did you plan this?”
“Nope.”
“It’s just totally spur of the moment?”
“Yes. A leap of faith. A well-educated guess. A calculated gamble.”
She pressed her lips together and nodded slowly. “Interesting.”
“What?”
She shrugged. “Nothing. I’m just considering your proposal.”
“Once an agent, always an agent. Except in my case. Not an agent anymore.”
“But what if you were? What if I told you that it’s silly for you to be working on your own and you should come work with me? It doesn’t make any sense that you’re not agenting. You’re so good at it. You’re excellent at making your case.”
“Apparently not, since I just asked my girlfriend to marry me and it has since morphed into a discussion of my career path.”
She laughed and leaned into him, peering up at him with her mesmerizing blue eyes. “Yes, Zach, I will marry you. You make me happier than I ever imagined I could be. I’d be a fool to say anything but yes.”
They fell into a dizzying kiss that drowned out everything, even the sound of the crowd around them. When they came up for air, Paige felt the need to say one more thing. “I still want you to come work with me. Just think of how much fun it would be.”
He smiled and pulled her close, kissing the top of her head. “If it’ll make you happy, I’m in.” No, he hadn’t planned any of that, especially not Paige’s counterproposal, but in Zach’s estimation, it had all gone perfectly. Exactly as it was meant to be. And now, Zach didn’t simply feel like he was the luckiest guy in the world. He knew it.
