‘’Well I’ve got nowhere else to go so, if you don’t leave…then I will’’ and with that, she pushed her way past me again and began to run from the alley.

I was once again swift to catch up with her, where a repeat play of her trying to push me away so she could leave started up ‘’Taylor stop! Please, I don’t want to leave you out here like this’’ I insisted.

‘’This is my life Hudson. Deal with it, because I have. And I don’t want or need your pity right now making me feel any worse’’ she snapped with tears fast filling her eyes, and it took everything I had in me at that moment not to mirror those tears back.

‘’Well at least let me give you some money so you can find somewhere safe to sta-‘’

‘’See, this is exactly what I didn’t want. I’m not a freakin’ charity case! I can look after myself just fine’’ she spat stubbornly.

‘’Yeah, and we saw evidence of that tonight’’ I said with a raised brow down at her ‘’look, I know you’re not a charity case alright, nor do I wish to treat you like one. I’m simply asking you to let me help you Taylor, that’s all’’ I repeated softly.

She looked up at me with moistened lashes, and I could see whatever hardships she faced on the streets steadily fix her eyes in determined confidence, as she looked at me and very calmly said ‘’thank you Hudson for the offer. And for the ride tonight. I really do appreciate everything you’ve done for me. But we’re from two different worlds, and whether I like it or not…this is where our story ends’’ and with that, she hoisted her rucksack back over her shoulder and calmly walked past me.

I was more than a little stunned. In a world where people on a constant daily basis tried pocketing friendship with me to line their own, I guess I somewhat expected her to jump at the opportunity to accept help from me. But she never did. And that one self-preserved act alone, made me rather admire her above most people I’ve ever met.

‘’At least let me buy you dinner then…’’

TAYLOR POV:

I turned slowly and looked at him, feeling a small smile warm my lips over Hudson’s concerned persistence. And as much as I wanted to, I knew I had to sever this friendship before it severed me, as nothing had come this close to breaking my walls down, than that of a warm hand extended from someone I truly liked.

‘’I don’t even know you’’ I said starting to walk away from him again.

‘’I don’t know you either, yet I’m still here aren’t I?’’ he said, and I paused turning to look at him ‘’would it uh, help if I told you my business partner canceled on me tonight? I was supposed to have dinner with him and now I have to dine alone, which honestly I really hate doing’’ he said with a boyish grin.

It made me smile, and at that moment I wanted nothing more than to be his companion for dinner that night ‘’well, I guess there’s no harm in joining you. It’s the least I could do after all you’ve done for me tonight’’ I said lowering my eyes a little bashful at him, and he instantly made his way over to me.

‘’Thank you Taylor, that would make me very happy indeed’’ he smiled warmly ‘’here, let me carry that for you’’ and with ease, Hudson politely took my rucksack from me and hoisted it over his shoulder.

I felt rather awful now. I hadn’t at all meant to lash out at him the way I did. Accepting help was one thing. I was used to it wherever I could get it, accepting and begging for change from random passers-by. But this was different. This was him. The him who deep down I never really did want to leave me tonight, yet had to fight the courage somehow to say goodbye as I would, and could, never be a part of his life. Because it was as I said, we were from different worlds. And the second I let myself forget that, was the second all the years of pent-up emotion would flow a lonely river of tears from my eyes.

Despite everything I’d been through, I still on occasion believed that sometimes in life things happened for a reason. And right now, with nothing but the wildcard of ‘chance’ to play, I was willing to let Hudson prove the mystery of that theory.

‘’So, where are you taking me?’’ I grinned.

‘’That depends, what do you fancy having? We can go anywhere you like’’ he grinned back, as we made our way out from the alley together, and over to his car I could see parked by the side of the road.

‘’Well, certainly not beef bourgeon’’ I laughed ‘’aww come on, don’t look so grim. I’m not. That was actually one of my better meals’’ I told him chirpily, and it was true. I’ve at times had to eat food way past their sell-by date just to survive, often finding myself being sick within the hour, with unfortunately having no choice but to endure it.

‘’It upsets me seeing you having to live in poverty like this. I just wish there was something I coul-‘’

‘’Let’s not put a damper on this evening shall we’’ I said politely cutting him short ‘’I’m agreeing to accompany you in absence of your dinner date tonight, where you can make up all your feeling bad for me by buying me a nice meal’’ I said with a happy grin, which seemed to relax him a little as he warmly grinned back and said ‘’and I promise to make it the best meal ever. In fact, I’m taking you to my favorite restaurant where we can eat to our hearts desire and more’’ he beamed, making me instantly laugh over his instant upbeat happiness in getting to spoil me. It was sweet. He was sweet. And for the little extended time I had with him, I was going to make sure to enjoy the rest of this night to its absolute fullest.

‘’So, what does this favorite restaurant of yours serve?’’ I asked buckling myself in safely while Hudson started up the car for us to leave, feeling my stomach rumbling rather heavily now at the idea this time of having real food inside me.

‘’You’ll see…’’ he winked with a mischievous glint exciting his eyes as he too buckled up, before speeding us past the hotel where the cops out front had now made way for the build-up of traffic the arrest had caused, where in no time we were back once again on the main high-street on the way to Hudson’s favorite restaurant eatery.

CHAPTER 8

Never did our worlds feel so far apart as when Hudson pulled us into the fancy rounded driveway of The George -the apparent favorite restaurant of his, in which he was supposed to dine that night with the work colleague who’d canceled on him.

And now here I was. The replacement. Dressed like a high school dropout and smelling of week-old garbage…there is no way in holy HELL I can go in there, I thought, feeling embarrassed nerves fast crawl its way over me like marvels Venom, as I sat frozen in my seat imagining every diners eyes suddenly turn and look at me when I walked in…before projectile vomiting their food at the disgust of my unsightly presence.

‘’Taylor…hellooo? Are you ready?’’ Hudson asked playfully waving his hand in front of my face.

‘’No. I mean yeah. I mean uh, um, I’m not really dressed to go inside somewhere so fancy’’ I told him nervously biting my bottom lip.

‘’Of course you are, you look beautiful’’ he smiled.
