‘’Do you know her? Who is she?’’ I demanded turning and looking at him in angst.
‘’That my dear is Jessica Ortiz’’
‘’Hudson’s ex-girlfriend…??’’ I gasped, my eyes instantly snapping down again at the grounds below, feeling a painful sting build behind them as I watched the man I was supposed to share my future with, now sharing a private reunion with the once love of his life….
CHAPTER 42
None of it made sense. None of it.
What on earth was she even doing here? Why? And HOW??
‘’Crashing the party obviously’’ said Skipp as if reading my mind somehow ‘’smh, guess she pimped a few of her high-end friends to leak info on Hudson’s whereabouts’’
‘’Why now?’’
‘’Now only to you. This happens between them all the time’’ he shrugged casually, and took another long swig from his bottle of wine followed by a double hiccup ‘’and I mean really, what do you expect?’’ his slurred words rambled on ‘’she is the love of his life after all, it’s what they do: make up, break up, then make up again. Ugh, I’ve been watching their merry-go-round shit for years on end, so really none of this surprises me (hiccup!)’’
I could feel my eyes stinging hard, and the lump forming in my throat about near damn ready to choke me!
‘’No’’ I said shaking my head firmly with my shoulders confidently squared ‘’Hudson wouldn’t do that to me’’
‘’Perhaps not intentionally darling, but I’ve seen many filler girls like you come and go over the years, all with the same belief that Avery loved each and every one of them. And while I’ve no doubt he certainly made them feel that way, he at the end of the day always returned to his true love’’
I looked back down over the balcony at them both, then back again at Skipp with quizzical eyes ‘’why are they still fighting then? Forgive my incredulity, but I have a hard time believing anyone would speak with the so-called ‘love of their life’ that way’’ I said with a sharp raised brow, as parts of their conversation could now be heard clearly from where we were, something about ‘’…this is a private party, how did you get in?’’ and ‘’…yeah well you left me’’
‘’It might seem that way now but give it an hour or so, because it’s as I told you, that’s just what they do’’ Skipp shrugged again.
‘’No. What Hudson and I have is real’’ I told him firmly.
‘’Riddle me this then...’’ Skipp said turning and looking me directly in my eyes ‘’why is he out there with her, when he should be in here with you? This is your celebration party after all, is it not?’’
I couldn’t answer.
‘’Oh hells bells, where are my manners’’ Skipp said lightly placing a hand on my shoulder with a genuine look of concern down at me ‘’I guess I didn’t want to allude to the fact that it’s grown somewhat tiring over the years having girl after girl come crying to me, the ‘best friend’, over something I myself of course have no control over. But you’re different to all those girls Taylor. If anything, I was kind of rooting for you both’’ he smiled softly ‘’I guess…I guess I should have been more of a friend to you, and warned you of all this happening before irreversible feelings for him develop- oh no, they already have, haven’t they?’’ he said stepping forward and embracing me lightly in a warm hug.
‘’Yes’’ I said, my body finally unleashing all the willpower I’d been holding onto as I turned and cried it out hard in Skipp’s arms.
‘’’Ssh ssh ssh, it’s okay Taylor, it’s okay. I’ll help you through this’’ he said resting my head against his chest and holding me close. I stole another painful look down at the grounds at Hudson and his ex, and felt almost sick with nausea when seeing her talking to him with her hand on his upper arm.
‘’Don’t do that to yourself’’ said Skipp gently pulling me away from the balcony so I couldn’t torture myself anymore ‘’it’ll only hurt all the more if you do’’ he said, softly returning my head to his chest where he continued to warmly hug and comfort me.
‘’I’m such a fool aren’t I?’’ I sobbed looking at him completely helpless, shamefully feeling my bottom lip begin to quiver as I looked to him to give me the answers I needed.
I in that very moment got them…
‘’What the fuck?!’’ I bellowed, taking an instant step back and slapping him hard when Skipp did the unthinkable in leaning his lips down to fucking kiss me!! ‘’You didn’t throw this party to celebrate us at all, DID YOU?!!’’ I barked ‘’this was all just another ‘Skipp Extravaganza’ in your effort to make you look good!’’ I snapped in rage ‘’Well?!! What’s your excuse blondie??’’ I demanded ‘’certainly can’t use your alcohol intake to vindicate you this time, not without making an entire mockery of the party you threw, which as we both know now is a complete and utter charade!’’
‘’I can explain’’
‘’Go ahead, let’s see where that cocky British wisdom gets you’’ I sneered up at him ‘’as I thought’’ I tutted, my folded arms and angered eyes watching him stand there showered in silence.
He then placed the empty bottle he’d been drinking down on the table beside him, smoothed back his slick blonde hair, and adjusted the suit jacket on his body, all with a subtle irksome smile that grated at my impatience.
‘’It’s become part of my natural temperament over the years to have the last word in a conversation’’ said Skipp taking a step closer to me ‘’now I know I’m not your favorite person, but push comes to shove baby I’m not a liar either’’ he said, hypnotizing his slithered gaze through my eyes ‘’you can lie to Avery. Hell, you can even lie to yourself. But you can’t lie to me darling’’ he said traveling his eyes down to my lips and back again ‘’it might only be atom-sized right now, but there is something between us Taylor. I feel it, and I know you feel it too’’ he said taking another step closer.
I looked at him, mirroring a hungered smile down at his lips also, which made his own smile especially when I took the extra step up close to him so our bodies were touching, … ‘’the only thing I feel for you Skipp is disgust’’ I hissed through clenched teeth, unflinching in my stance at mirroring back his spiteful trickery.
‘’Oh really? That why you were eyeball fucking me the entire time during my speech? That’s right Taylor I see you, and no matter how cute you think you are, you’re not fooling anyone baby’’ he smirked cockily.
