Clink clink clink!
I recognized Skipp’s voice instantly, but couldn’t yet see him for all the people around.
‘’Attention!’’ his voice echoed again, and that last one simmered a quiet hush over the room as everyone, myself and Hudson included, all turned to see a rather stylish looking Skipp stood fashionable tall at the far center of the room, atop a fancy decorated podium with a wireless mic in his hand, and his signature Cheshire cat grin smiling his lips.
Only he could pull off the show stopping red cranberry outfit he wore that night, with its fitted trousers and silk suit jacket looking rather handsome upon his well-built shirtless body. And with his bright silver blonde hair all neatly slicked back looking like one of The Lost Boys, he indeed gained the desired attention he commanded of the room.
‘’Now that all you rich buggers have simmered down’’ and the audience laughed ‘’…it’s time to welcome the beautiful couple, and my best friends, Hudson Avery and his exquisite beauty Taylor Wainwright to the party. Come on over you two’’ he beamed, and a courteous parting instantly split the crowd as Hudson and I made our way through, and up to the front of the room.
‘’Keep it short and sweet please, no embarrassing stories about me’’ laughed Hudson as we neared him.
‘’Well now that you took the fun out of it’’ teased Skipp, and everyone in the room began laughing at the boys humor, myself included. And it was so nice watching everyone have fun, while getting to know all of Hudson's friends, and more importantly, be accepted by them in his world.
I won’t lie, part of me at times felt rather like the imposter, knowing any given moment someone could innocently strike up a conversation with me, asking what I did prior to meeting Hudson. And then just like that, I suddenly find myself in a situation having to either uncomfortably lie to keep my secret, or come clean and answer the embarrassing truth of my miserable past. In given any case, the wonderful new lifestyle I was trying to maintain would inevitably crumble or break, on account of my chagrin-induced lies. Because let’s face it, take away the dress, the pretty makeup, and the delectable man on my arm…and all you’re left with is plain ole Taylor Wainwright, the scruffy girl by the bus shelter begging for change.
The twist of fate born irony of it all, almost made me wonder how many of the people inside this room, may have once on occasion spared me change from their pockets...stop it Taylor. Don’t think that way now, I scolded myself…you’re not that girl anymore. That beggar’s lifestyle is long behind you now. You have a wonderful man on your arm that cares very much for you, and you him. So don’t go letting negative thoughts of the past dull this glorious evening.
‘’…isn’t that right ole boy?’’ boomed Skipp’s heavy laughter into the mic.
‘’We were both to blame for that one’’ Hudson laughed back, and the infectious good mood rocking the room right now brought me right out of my misery bubble, and back to the wonderful reality of my fun new life.
‘’Having said all that, no one, and I mean no one is more happier than me right now, than to see my best friend with someone who I know truly has his best interests at heart. Someone who cares for him on that deep special level only a soulmate would. Someone who from the day I met her has shown nothing but kind warmth, good graces, and natural elegance on top of her already good-hearted nature, the absolute perfect package combination to win over the heart of a man like Hudson…and believe me, many have tried’’ he grinned simmering the audience again with humored laughter ‘’I can however say from the honesty of my own heart, that I’ve not ever seen my best friend happy like this before. People like these two are hard to come by, and I know Hudson himself will continue in his own grace and kindness, to keep the beautiful woman by his side happy’’ Skipp smiled warmly down at me, and I felt my eyes begin slowly tearing up over his genuine heartfelt speech ‘’I’m happy beyond words these two beautiful souls found each other’’ he smiled warmly again between us both ‘’and I’ve said this once before to Hudson, but will say it again here today in front of all of you, and that’s that no one deserves their happy ending more than you ole boy. You’ve gone through a lot, most of which I was there to witness, and is the reason I know you’ve found your special one in Taylor, because I see how she completes you from the genuine smile of happiness on your face’’
‘’It’s true’’ Hudson turned and looked at me, and
kissed me softly on the cheek with a few nearby couples around us all ‘’aahhing’’ in affection at his sweet display of warmth.
‘’I know my baby’’ I said kissing him back ‘’it’s true of me also’’ I smiled.
‘’I know too’’ he smiled back.
‘’I want you all to now raise your glasses in toast with me…’’ said Skipp, and a sea of raised glasses including ours, was all you could see as Skipp closed out his speech with a loud ‘’To the happy couple!’’
‘’TO THE HAPPY COUPLE!’’ people cheered, and a huge round of applause rumbled out across the room as friends of the boys, and mine too now I guess, all warmly came over to congratulate us both, as did Skipp himself, doing a little jump off the podium and making his way over to us.
Is it me, or does all this celebration of togetherness kind of feel like we’ve just gotten, married or something? I grinned to myself, smiling a silly wistful smile as my mind wandered off in imagination as to whether that could maybe one day be on the cards in my future with Hudson and me.
Whether it was or it wasn’t, all I knew right now was that I had indeed found my soulmate exactly like Skipp had referenced, and nothing and no one was ever going to take my happiness away.
‘’I admit, I was a little skeptical at first about this whole party thing’’ said Hudson to Skipp who joined us now, as we all found a free moment to talk amongst ourselves when the hired DJ began playing party tunes, that instantly got people to the dancefloor shaking their stuff.
‘’Go on’’ beamed an ear-to-ear grinning Skipp, looking extremely proud of himself which made me grin.
‘’Well let’s just put it this way, you outdid yourself tonight ‘ole boy’’’ winked Hudson, and pulled his best friend in for a big warm hug which I instantly took my phone out and snapped a few pictures of them both, so we could later remember this joyous moment ‘’thank you buddy, really, thank you. I was not at all expecting anything like this, I truly am touched. And your speech up there was just everything man, and I freakin’ love you!’’ said Hudson hugging him again.
‘’I love you too ole boy’’ Skipp said hugging him back tight.
‘’Shall I uh, give you two gentleman a moment?’’ I teased, and they each burst out laughing, before pulling me into their warm hug also.
‘’I too wish to express how touched I am over the amazing party you threw here tonight Skipp, I’ve never seen anything quite like it, it’s beautiful in every sense of the word’’ I smiled up at him ‘’but it was your speech just now that sparkled the entire night for me, and I feel it my duty to honor you the promise that I will indeed look after him, and make him very happy’’ I said wrapping my arms around Hudson’s waist.
‘’You already do that baby’’ he smiled down at me, and broke away from Skipp to pull me closer in his arms where his warm lips softly pressed to mine in a beautiful romantic kiss.
‘’Save all that pashing for behind closed doors you two’’ teased Skipp, grabbing himself a handful of hors d'oeuvres from off the silver tray carried by one of the catering staff walking by.
‘’Actually if you guys don’t mind, I think I’m going to take myself a quick lap around the venue and snap as many pics as I can of this wonderful evening, so we have those beautiful memories to always look back on’’ I smiled readying my cell phone camera app.
‘’Sounds good’’ winked Hudson ‘’I actually need to use the gents real quick, so I’ll be back with you guys in a bit’’ he said, and kissed me again softly on my lips, before making his way through the crowd to go find the restroom.
