‘’Okay, thank you Hudson. You first then’’ she smiled across at me, as we sat hand in hand together on the couch after eating our meal – with me now clothed, enjoying the peaceful warmth of each other’s company, deciding now was a good time to have that deep talk and get to know one another that much better.

I gently unhooked my hand from hers and ran it through my hair, before taking a deep breath and exhaling out slowly…

‘’My father was a drunk. My mother too. But her weakness for alcohol stemmed as a result of her efforts to try and drown away the pain he caused her. I’d watch my father as a child beat my mother black and blue, almost every night after tucking me into bed.

I think they thought I couldn’t hear them, that my closed door was enough to soundproof the incessant abuse taking place just a few feet down the corridor from my room. I hated him. I really hated him. And yet he wasn’t always like that, he was a good man once. That’s the reason my mother loved him, and why they had me, or so I’m told. But time sometimes makes people mean and bitter. And the time my mother spent with me growing me up, was more time away that wasn’t spent on him. He wasn’t abusive to me or anything, but to my mother…he was a monster. His self-loathing turned indignant jealousy of me caused him to drink all the more, and in his drunken state, he beat my mother like a punching doll in his bitter remedy of relieving his stress. It became too much for her in the end, and so to the bottle she turned in her weakened state of ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’’

She was quiet, but I could feel Taylor looking at me with heavy sympathy in her eyes. I dared not look at her for fear of being less of the man she perceived me to be, with the painful sting of tears I fought to keep back as my mind journeyed itself through the memory lane of my childhood.

It didn’t help I guess that I kept this shit in. But, better I let it fuel me than break me down completely where I cry forever.

‘’He died a few years later from alcohol poisoning’’ I continued on ‘’and my mother unfortunately has never been right since. I know she loved that man, despite everything he did to her, she loved him still’’ I sighed ‘’she lives in a nursing home now with the best care money can buy. I visit her privately whenever I have the chance, but it’s too painful at times seeing the old woman she’s become, hearing her still calling out for him in what little memory she has left in terms of her dementia. No child should ever have to witness the unfair oppressive treatment from one parent to another. And I just wished I’d been old enough to beat my father down, and prevent the years of hurt my mother succumbed to at his hands. But I was young, and I was scared…scared his jealousy would one day overspill and he would do the same to me also. I honestly don’t know how she did it, how she endured it for all those years, yet never once left him. And it took many of mine as a growing adult to understand the psychology of a relationship like that, one driven by toxic jealousy and unnecessary hate’’

‘’It wasn’t your fault Hudson’’ Taylor said softly placing her hand over mine, her concerned eyes looking so intently at me from my side vision, I now couldn’t help but look back at her.

I felt a fool for crying.

But Taylor was there with a warm shoulder to hold as I leaned over and hugged her tight. The emotion passed quick, but the painful memories would forever last.

‘’I’m...I’m sorry’’ I said pulling back from her and wiping over my face’’ it’s just I haven’t shared that with anyone in a very long time’’ I admitted.

‘’It’s okay baby, it’s okay’’ she cooed sweetly ‘’you’re hurting, and it’s okay to hurt sometimes, that’s what makes us human’’ she smiled softly.

‘’You’re very right’’ I nodded, my fingers lightly brushing back a strand of hair away from her face, before leaning in and kissing her lips then continuing with my story…

‘’I vowed never to be my father, and I never was. I’d rather end my own life than to ever treat a woman the way he treated my mother. Jessica knew that about me, and at times I felt she mistook my kindness for weakness’’

‘’Jessica….your ex-girlfriend right?’’ and I nodded ‘’yes, I remember you mentioning her before. What um…what exactly happened between you two?’’

‘’Wow, where do I even start?’’ I said with a heavy sigh ‘’I guess I should take you right back to the beginning of it all. To the premise that in life we need to get first from A to B, to crawl before we walk, and so forth and so on. Well, I always planned on working in computer software. I loved computers and everything about them, from the mechanics that make them function, to the internal software usable by that function, still do. I also learned from a young age that that’s where the money was, and I vowed to make a lot of it so I could live the kind of lifestyle I always desired. Tazer was just an embryo of a dream when I first started out, but one I never lost sight of working day in and day out, doing every odd job I could find to pay for a top college education in computer coding.

I had to.

There was no college fund put aside for me to enjoy in my late teens, with pretty much every penny we had drowned in pints turned gallons of useless alcohol. I was at home long enough to get myself on my own two feet, before venturing out into the big world and getting my first place to rent in some rundown studio apartment near the college.

Between college tuition fees and rent, I at times found I definitely struggled a bit. But my raw determination to see my project through, with the high ticket belief I could one day turn it into a goldmine, was what kept me going. I not only love computers, but having experienced myself the wide aspects of its use, now have a full understanding of the psychological addiction that comes with using them. The hours one can spend getting lost online, at the time, was the best distraction to curb the constant anxiety I felt as a result of my upbringing. And I took that personal experience with me in the determined mind-set to excel at the college I was attending.

And it’s there where I met Skipp. All fresh off the plane from London England, with not a single change in personality of the man you see today’’ I chuckled ‘’he was ambitious and driven just like me. And after learning that and more about him, in particular, that he too had an affinity for computer coding and was the reason he’d traveled all the way across the pond to earn an education in one of Americas top computing schools, it wasn’t long before we literally became the best of friends’’ I smiled in memory ‘’and yes, I know he’s a royal pain in the butt sometimes, but that guy has seen me at my best and at my worst. I honestly don’t know what I would do without him, and is the reason along with his proficient computing skills and dedicated work ethic, that I without vote appointed him position as CEO of Tazer’’

‘’He is a little crazy yes’’ chuckled Taylor ‘’but I see the bond you two have as friends, as well as your working and personal relationship, and honestly I find it very sweet’’ she smiled softly squeezing my hand in hers.

‘’Oh it’s not without its moments’’ I chuckled ‘’but overall it is a solid friendship. So anyway, we began hanging out most nights together Skipp and me, cramming in a ton of work and cheap takeout over at his place. Skipp had money to live well while in the US. He has well-off parents in the UK who paid for everything for him to come over and get his education, including a large studio apartment for him to reside in, with rent paid for the first six months. Part of me admittedly was a little jealous of all the stories he’d tell me about home life back in the UK. And upon inviting him to mine one night after class finished to kick back a few cold ones -as I was closer in location to the college than he was- he took one look around my apartment and in horrified disgust simply went ‘’nope!’’.

We ended up staying again at his that night, and fell asleep talking work as usual. He insisted I room with him after that, saying, and I quote: ‘’Your place reminds me of Hannibal Lecter’s lair, which honestly just gives me the fucking willies’’ and I swear, I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much, as it came out sounding amusingly odd with his accent, ha ha. He went on to say though that he liked my company, and enjoyed hanging out with me and talking computers and stuff. And it was that week after accepting his offer to move in with him, that I for the first time shared my idea of Tazer with Skipp, where from there it all slowly began to form and take life. We planned and worked on it for months on end. Trial and error, fail, eat, sleep, repeat, and all that jazz. We knew we wanted the app to be a popular social media tool, as well as a high-speed search engine, one with a powerful algorithm for all who use it -where they can freely post their content and have it enjoyed by others for years to come, without the interference of dated bots slowing the app down, or the overflow of unnecessary ads interfering with content traffic. Even with Skipp’s money – some of which he loaned extra from his parents, and what little I was still making between jobs, unfortunately wasn’t enough to get the high-powered software needed to even kick-start something as powerful as what we wanted. We took a break after that, deciding to take it one step at a time and at least finish out the school year with our degrees’’

‘’I agree with that’’ Taylor nodded.

‘’Me too’’ I said ‘’Skipp however was a bit of a partier, still is, ha ha. And when he wasn’t at home with me working on our project and college papers, he was out living it up in some of America's top hot spots in the city. I on the other hand preferred to stay in and busy myself with working on fresh coding for the app, which is exactly what I’d fallen asleep doing one evening, only to be awoken some hours later when hearing the key turn in the lock. I remember groggily looking up from the couch I’d fallen asleep on, to see a slightly tipsy Skipp stumbling his way in with some girl he wanted to get laid with. The friend she had with her looked just as uncomfortable as I did, as Skipp is in no way a delicate wallflower when he wants to have his fun’’ I chuckled ‘’and have fun he did with loud groaning already coming from his side of the room, as he and the girl started getting it on pretty fast. I was gentleman enough to quickly escort her friend into the living room and make her coffee while she waited. We soon got to talking and found that we actually had a lot in common, and from that night for the next six years, Jessica and I were practically inseparable. I knew I’d found the one, contrary to Skipp’s constant teasing of us being an old married couple, for we never went anywhere without each other. Those six years were nice, good memories, even better when Skipp and I finally got a few investors interested in our idea. And with everything we’d poured our blood, sweat, and tears into making this work, things were finally starting to pay off.

Not only had we secured a few investors, but our vision of ensuring our company the best chance of success we could give it, saw us too investing into the stock market system, placing sizable portions of whatever income we were making into already profitable companies out there. We were in this for the long haul, with the overall idea of maximizing our profits growth, were the return on investment would be poured back into scaling our own company to where we wanted it to be. It was the perfect win win’’

‘’Sounds good so far’’ nodded Taylor listening intently with keen interest to my story.

‘’It was, and it was the most wonderful feeling having both my best friend and girlfriend at the time to share everything with. Life couldn’t get any better, and with the stock market going the way it was we were set to earn back double what we’d put in and more, enough to get our idea in front of even more of the right people that would support it’’ I then let out a long heavy sigh, as past memories I’d long boxed away were being opened again one by one, as I continued telling Taylor my story…

‘’That’s when disaster hit and we lost everything, and I mean everything’’

‘’Oh no, what happened?’’
