‘’Yeah, it’s been a bit busy tonight. We should go’’ was all he said before taking my hand to leave, and I felt a small knot dig at my stomach as Hudson’s earlier mood across the room appeared to linger…something was bothering him, but what?

He was quiet all the way from home the party, in the car, up the elevator, and now into our apartment suite as we entered. Finally I couldn’t take it anymore…

‘’Okay Hudson stop. What’s going on? Are you alright?’’ I asked gently trying to hold his arm in my hand.

‘’Nothing. I’m fine’’ he said politely taking his arm from me and kicking his shoes off in the hall, before heading straight to the bar area and pouring himself a double-shot glass of bourbon.

‘’You don’t look fine, not how I’m used to seeing you anyway’’ I said following him over to the bar with my heels still on, each clicking away loudly across the marvel paved flooring on that side of the room ‘’did I…did I do something wrong tonight?’’ I asked worriedly, figuring he was maybe upset with me about something work-related. Could it be I hadn’t performed in the etiquette professional manner he’d expected of me? Even though my own self-assessment tonight told me I had ‘’look just tell me alright, I’d rather know sooner than later’’ I pressed him again when he still hadn’t answered.

I watched nervously as Hudson placed his glass down on the counter top, before turning and looking fully at me now for the first time since leaving the party ‘’I didn’t like seeing you talking alone with Skipp tonight’’

‘’Huh?’’ was all I said looking at him confused.

‘’I was watching you from across the room, it looked to me like the two of you were getting rather cozy together’’ he said picking his drink up again and gulping the rest down of what was left.

‘’I assure you you’ve got it all wrong’’ I told him ‘’I mean yes I was talking to him, you know, as work colleagues do. But after finding out he wasn’t gay – which believe me surprised me more than it did him when I told him, I kind of cut the conversation short’’

‘’You thought Skipp was gay? Yeah, I guess I could see how you came to that conclusion’’ he said, and I instantly felt my own lips smile when seeing the amused grin appear on his.

‘’How did he take it?’’ chuckled Hudson grabbing himself and me a bottled water from out the fridge.

‘’Not very well’’ I chuckled back ‘’in fact, I think he was a little offended’’ I laughed.

‘’Note to self: must tease Skipp endlessly about that next time I’m in the office’’ Hudson smirked, and opened up his bottle of water as did I mine, before somewhat nervously diverting his eyes from me which straight away got me curious…

‘’Skipp is your best friend right?’’

‘’Yes, he is’’ nodded Hudson, and instantly began gulping down half the bottle of water he was holding.

‘’…and he’s also your hand chosen CEO, so I take it there’s great trust between you two, right?’’

‘’Yep. Right again’’ he replied, somewhat nervously guzzling more water down.

‘’Then forgive my confusion Hudson but, why would that bother you? Like to the point where I was practically given the silent treatment the entire ride back’’ I said with a raised brow.

‘‘I just didn’t like you talking to him is all. There, I said what I said’’ he replied flatly.

‘’Why? What’s the problem?’’

‘’It’s a problem for me’’

‘’Look, I don’t know what’s gotten into you tonight Hudson, and right now I don’t care because this is ridiculous’’ I huffed opening up and gulping down my entire bottle of water, before smacking it on the counter in irritation ‘’…you might not see it’’ I continued on ‘’but I am trying my absolute best here, trying as hard as I can to adapt gracefully to your world, to accept all this sudden change, to blend in as normal with everyone and everything around me, whatever the hell ‘normal’ even is these days. All the while of course doing everything I can not to disappoint you, but rather have you proud of me where there’s no regret over the decision you made to help me. I’m not going to lie, it’s overwhelming at times, but I’m trying Hudson, I’m really trying’’ I blurted at him.

‘’Taylor I-‘’

‘’No! Because even with all I’m trying I at times still don’t know what you want from me, and I’m embarrassed!!’’ I began to sob ‘’…embarrassed because even if I work twelve-hour shifts every day for the rest of my damn life, I know I could never repay you even 10 percent of all you’ve done for me’’ I cried ‘’because let’s face it Hudson’’ I said looking teary-eyed up at him as all the emotion I was feeling suddenly rose to the surface ‘’…what could I possibly give the man that already has everything?’’

‘’Well, what are you going to give me?’’ he said taking a small step forward…

The directness of his words caught me clean off guard, as did his eyes each staring intensely down at my lips. I could feel my heart thudding hard as Hudson took another step closer to me, and I nervously one step back…

I was quiet for a moment, before slowly raising my eyes to meet his…

‘’I guess the only thing I have…me.’’

It was wrong.
