‘’You would have been too young at the time to understand, or even remember, but the famous stock crash of 2015 hit every business investor out there hard. For us, it was all we’d put in, including future rent money, bank loans, even money from local loan sharks which in itself was very risky. None of that mattered though, as the one person I truly cared for at the time, who I loved, and believed loved me back, coldly turned her back on me when I needed her the most. I still ‘til this day see her expression so clearly, as she without feeling looked me in the eyes and told me what a disappointing failure I’d become’’

‘’Wow’’ breathed Taylor beside me, a look of disbelief heavily knotting her brows together.

‘’It’s true, every bit of it’’ I sighed ‘’Jessica upped and left me the second she found out her lavish future of wealth and riches was no longer going to happen. And with no life left in me to even cry, it was Skipp who stayed by my side and…and…’’

‘’Awe Hudson it’s okay, you can tell me’’ Taylor said, softly holding her hand to my face with concern.

‘’…and stopped me from taking my own life in the weakened misery I felt over losing her’’

‘’Oh my god, baby, I am so sorry’’ she said, her eyes wide with sweet worry for me as I smoothed my hands back through my hair and sighed again deeply.

‘’It’s okay baby, I’m happy now’’ I told her, my hand softly warming over hers as I leaned across and kissed her again on the lips ‘’it was a lesson learned I guess, and at a time I needed to learn it. One where I’m now able to look back and say I have no regrets. At the time however Skipp stood as my strength, with his firm confidence in me and the belief in what we were doing, that saw us both get straight back to work when the stock market began to rebuild. We took any and every job we could in the assist of funding our company to life, where very luckily we managed to retain a few out of the pool of investors who’d lost their faith in us, for our myopic judgment in placing all we had into the stock market scheme. It took a couple of years for it to fully take off, but Tazer was finally launched in May of 2018, and it’s been a non-stop return on investment ever since. Now, here I am’’

‘’Oh Hudson, WOW! I am so so proud of you for bouncing back like that’’ Taylor cheered, instantly leaning forward and embracing me tightly in her arms ‘’but at the same time I’m sorry for all you had to go through to get here’’ she said, softly brushing her smooth lips across mine with a tender kiss.

‘’It was indeed quite the journey, one I can honestly say with my hand on my heart that if I had to do it all again…I wouldn’t do anything different. We need that pain sometimes to push us where we want to be. And right now, in this room with you in my arms, I know I’m exactly where I want to be’’

‘’Aww Hudson’’ she smiled, and her body felt so warm in my arms as I pulled her close and kissed her softly.

TAYLOR POV:

We sat kissing again for the longest time, with me secretly hoping my lips were enough of a distraction for him to forget about wanting to learn my story. Listening to everything Hudson shared with me tonight, while heartbreaking in so many ways, was a Hollywood movie next to what I went through…

‘’So, it’s your turn now baby, and I’m very eager to learn what landed you in the situation you were in’’ he said holding me close and looking with genuine concern in my eyes.

Guess my puckered lips weren’t that much of a distraction after all. Oof, okay here goes…

CHAPTER 25

‘’How old did you say you were when she passed?’’ Hudson asked, when learning I had lost my mother at a young age.

‘’Only 8’’ I told him ‘’and even though I knew she wasn’t coming back, I was too young still to process the full impact of what that really meant’’

‘’I’m so sorry baby, that breaks my heart’’ he said snuggling me closer to him on his lap where I sat, and kissing my cheek in comfort which made me smile warmly.

‘’I guess we both suffered loss in one way or another’’ he said gently rubbing my hands in his ‘’and I know how precious the bond between a mother and daughter is, and I’m sorry baby that you missed the chance to further experience that. I imagine your family was simply devastated at the time’’ he said looking apologetically hurt for me, and the smile I had faded, along with his when noticing the grim expression on my face now.

‘’Not exactly’’ I said ‘’I um…I’m unfortunately the product of an abusive family upbringing. One which literally began the night of my mother’s passing’’ I told him, and I could see Hudson’s brows furrow deep as he obviously wasn’t expecting to hear me say anything like that.

‘’I don’t remember much of her other than her warm smile and kind voice, both of which forever lives on in my heart. I was too young I guess to hold any other real memories of her. All I really remember is that she was there one minute, and then suddenly she was gone, with no explanation ever given to me as to where or why.

‘’Oh baby, I am so sorry’’ he breathed holding me close. And while I knew it was there, all simmering beneath the surface, I wouldn’t allow the emotion I felt to consume me whole. Not yet anyway, as it was important to me that Hudson heard out my entire story…

‘’I’m the youngest of two siblings’’ I continued ‘’my older sisters, who both were around 14 or 15 at the time of mom's death, each displayed little to no emotion which upset me greatly. I soon found out why when I was later shoved in the cellar and it locked shut behind me at my stepfather’s request. I wasn’t even given adequate time to grieve before the beatings started, first by my sisters…then by my stepfather’’ I paused a moment to take a long deep breath, as I too hadn’t told my story in a while, or more accurately at all, because, who else was there to speak to? I was alone.

I stole a glimpse at Hudson’s face, and instantly lowered my eyes from the stunned shock I could see he was in because, things were about to get a whole lot worse…

‘’…my sisters wasted no time lobbying verbal displeasure at me, at how I was our mother's favorite little darling, and how it was me who was always given first choice of everything and treated better than them. I didn’t see it that way. It wasn’t my fault I was the youngest, where naturally at times I was treated still like the baby of our family, because in a way I was. She didn’t mean any harm by it, she loved us all equally. But clearly her innocent actions festered something dark inside my sisters’ cold hearts, something that was easily brought out in them with a simple shift in ‘favoritism’ by my stepfather. I have since forgiven them for all that happened, well, in my mind I have anyway, it never transpired in person. I forgave them I guess because I didn’t want to be like them, to live forever with hate in my heart which only poisons you from the inside out. They’re still family, the only ones I have left…but not him, he will never be’’ she said with a deep clench of her jaw. And I could feel the hate she kept dormant from her sisters emanate out strongly through her eyes towards her stepfather.

‘’Forgive me Taylor for interrupting but, what happened to your biological father?’’

‘’Till this day I still don’t know. Mom never talked about him, and I never asked. Of course, I wish I had now’’ I said with a sad sigh that broke my heart every time I thought about it.

‘’So anyway, I had all my pretty clothes and accessories stripped from me and given to my sisters, who from each day forth pranced around in them while making sour fun of the rags I was given to wear instead. All house privileges I was once used to enjoying, such as soaking in the tub or spending time out in the garden were stripped from me also, where I instead was hosed down once a week by my sisters to keep me clean, and the only time I ever got to spend out in the garden anymore was when I was made to rake it fresh with my bare hands. I was only 8 Hudson, my bones barely even able to stand cold weather at times let alone rake an entire ten-foot garden -along with of course the rest of household chores which I was made to do day in and day out. And do them I had to, otherwise, the beatings would start and I’d find myself having to do them anyway, only now with a full sleeve of heavy welts and bruises to my body, from brutal back and forth whip’s I’d receive with broomsticks, or any other close by objects that gave their fists a rest’’

‘’Taylor I-‘’

‘’No please, let me continue’’ I told him, uncomfortably noticing the heavy pain reflected in his eyes from what was already too much for him to bare.
