That still sounded risky for her, but it was her decision. I wasn’t sure a party was the best spot for me right now, but even Chantry looked excited. I was such a sucker for those hopeful faces. As hard as I tried, I couldn’t even remember the last time I was at a party. My mum insisted I have a special night for my sixteenth, but I’m not sure you would consider that a party.

Mum had bought me a pretty dress with blue sequins, and I had my hair and makeup done. A huge limo had taken Lizzy and me to a fancy restaurant and then an all-ages club. We felt like superstars for the night.

It felt like they were holding their breath for my answer. “I’m not sure if you want me at a party, I tend to run my mouth in public, but if you really want me to go, then I’ll go.”

“Yay!” They cheered, and Ivy almost knocked over the open bottle of nail polish. “I can’t wait to figure out what I’m going to wear. I know that Zigzag likes the goth look. Do you think I could pull it off without looking washed out?”

Oh lord, I hadn’t even been thinking about something to wear. I should’ve done more shopping when I was out with Blake. Dammit, I didn’t want to call my Father.

“What about you, Ren? What are you going to wear?”

“I’ll look when I get back to my room. I don’t even remember what I brought with me,” I said and smiled. “But, I love the goth idea for you. I can do an excellent smoky eye if you want?” I said, quickly changing the topic.

The last thing I wanted to talk about was my father. We’d just gotten off the sad topics for tonight, and there was no need to rehash. The situation was what it was, and it was obvious that my father didn’t care about me. Even though I’d told him I didn’t want to see him, my heart held out hope that he would reach out and prove that he wanted to be in my life. Prove that he loved me, but instead, he remained silent. Not a call or text in almost a week.

I wiped away the stray tear that leaked out before the other two girls saw it. There were some things in life you wish you weren’t right about, and your father not loving you was on that list.

NOVEMBER 9 – WEDNESDAY 6:20 AM

Myles

My pen made a little tapping noise as I bounced it off the table, my mind torn between the lesson in front of me and Nash. He had fumed all swim practice. Ren was getting under his skin and not in a good way. I didn’t think he’d randomly kill her, that wasn’t what we stood for, but there were a whole lot worse things he could do. I was genuinely worried for her, and everything was a mess. I wanted Ren, but this bet had turned everything on its head, and now I wasn’t sure what was safer for her.

I was so deep in thought that I didn’t hear Ren until she stepped up to the desk. “Wow, you’re even early,” she said, and I lifted my head to stare at her. Fuck, my reaction was always the same. My heart would leap in my chest, and my stomach would tighten into knots while my pants suddenly became a little more snug. “You’re doing it again.”

“Doing what again?”

“Staring and not saying anything.”

I smirked. “Aye, I guess I am. I got ya a coffee.” I pushed the coffee across to her and grabbed the brown bag handing it over with my surprise.

“What’s in here? It’s not something gross, is it?” She poked at the bag, and I chuckled.

“What are we in elementary school? I wouldn’t have done that even then.” Leaning back in my chair, I crossed my arms, but Ren arched one of her sexy eyebrows as she did that thing where she silently questioned me. It really did freak me out and held some sort of power over my mouth. “Okay, fine. I would’ve done it in elementary school, but not now.”

She still gave me a look like she wasn’t sure if she should believe me, but sat down and unfolded the top of the bag. I watched her face as she looked, and my heart warmed as she smiled wide.

“It’s a muffin.” Ren reached into the bag and pulled out the mammoth-sized muffin.

“Not just any muffin, that is a raspberry, sour cream muffin from Coralee’s Bakery in town. They are always sold out, so you have to get there super early if you hope to get anything. Lucky for me they open at five.”

She pulled off the top, and I couldn’t look away if I wanted to as she took a sensual bit of the soft muffin. I licked my lips as she did hers, and her little moan had my cock at full mast. Fuck, I’d get her a muffin every day if she moaned like that for me again. I’d get her anything she wanted if she moaned like that in my ear. Every muscle flexed with need as she took another bite and licked her lips. Watching someone eat a muffin should not be this sexy. Oh my god, what would she do with whipcream?

“Myles, this is amazing,” she said, and as stupid as it was, my chest filled with pride. I’d finally done something right. She still had the hint of a bruise from where I’d given her the accidental black eye. On the plus side, you really only could go up from punching her in the face and spilling hot coffee all over her.

“Ya really like it?”

Ren took another bite and moaned again. If she kept that up, I was going to drag her to a storage room or just lay her out on the table.

“Freaking eh!”

I didn’t know what that meant, but the dreamy look on her face said it all. “Well, that’s good because I actually got ya a couple of different ones to try. I didn’t know what ya’d like.” I pulled three more bags out of my backpack and handed them over. “There is a fruit delight, triple chocolate threat, and a zucchini muffin which is my personal favorite.”

Ren stared at the bags and then up at me. “I know it’s over the top, but I genuinely didn’t know which one ya’d like best, and I really needed to make up for some shit, like hitting ya in the face and…well, all of it,” I rambled and rubbed the back of my neck. Why did she make me so sweaty? I hadn’t been this nervous to talk to a girl since losing my virginity, and that was years ago.

Her cheeks pinked, and for just a few seconds, her eyes which were always so guarded, softened. Before my brain had time to register what I was doing and that it was most certainly a horrible idea, I stood and wandered around to her side of the desk and sat down.

“What are you doing,” she asked. Her voice was once more as cool as a winter breeze, and I wondered who’d hurt her.
