There were no words to describe what I felt as I searched his eyes. They held no humor, and when he touched his lips to mine, the desire was still there, but he didn’t press further. It was more of a promise than a kiss.

“No one will ever hurt ya, and if they did, they’d have to deal with me. I will make them beg at yer feet for forgiveness, Snowflake, while I burn their world to the ground. Call me a monster if ya want, but nothing would stop me. Not even you,” he whispered against my lips.

We stood motionless, our eyes locked. I broke the stillness and kissed Myles hard, hugging him tighter. At no time in my life had I felt safer. Even if it was nothing more than pretty words, they were the sweetest I’d ever heard. Cupping my cheeks, Myles kissed me back, and his tongue was relentless as he explored my mouth, stealing my moans.

“Fuck,” he growled, breaking the kiss and touching his forehead to mine. “We really need to go before the last of my willpower snaps.”

Nodding, I stepped back but laid my hand on his chest.

“I believe you would do that for me, and….”

Myles’ finger was soft as it touched my lips and halted the rest of my sentence.

“Ya never need to thank me, and if yer gonna ask me not to, ya might as well save yer breath. Come on, let’s get out of here.”

“Okay.”

Within seconds we were out the door and smuggling me off the property.

DECEMBER 16 – FRIDAY 6:57 PM

Making the final turn, we veered into the departure area and pulled over to park.

“Are ya sure ya don’t want me to come with ya?”

I laughed at the quirky lop-sided smile plastered on Myles’s face.

“Yes, I’m sure. But no worries, I’ll bring you back something very Canadian, and I already promised to send pictures.”

“A few sexy ones would be nice too.” He winked as I glared. “I’ll take that as a no.”

I shook my head at him, leaning in to give him a quick peck before pushing open my door and hopping out.

Myles got out and pulled the heavy suitcase out of the back of the truck, sitting it on the ground for me. Grabbing me before I could touch my luggage, he pulled me into a hug, and every sappy movie I’d ever watched where two people said goodbye at the airport flooded my mind. How had this even happened? I’d been so determined to keep him at a distance, but somehow he picked the lock on my emotions and snuck inside.

“I’m going to miss you, and thank you for helping me.”

“I’m going to miss ya too, Snowflake. Be safe,” he said.

“I will.”

Cars were lining up behind us, and I smiled, wanting to remember this sweet moment that was so new for me, carrying it with me on my flight. As I wheeled my bag through the glass doors, the putrid scent of too many people and jet fuel hit me making me gag.

Looking around for a company I recognized, I finally spotted one from ads in Alberta. The airport was packed with people heading somewhere for the holidays, and it was easy to tell who was escaping to an exotic destination as they stood in line with flowered shirts and flip-flops. They looked like they were going to run off the plane and straight onto the beach.

There were only a couple of people at the linkup to purchase tickets, but the line for the security area looked like a snake that went on forever. My first time flying had been on a private flight, and we drove right up to the plane. This was very different, and I felt a trickle of fear when I realized what I was doing. I hardly knew what to ask for because I’d never traveled alone, hell other than to the movies or the mall, I’d never gone anywhere alone. Nervousness took over, and even though I’d contacted Lizzy, and she was going to borrow her mum’s car to pick me up, I looked over my shoulder to the drop-off area, wondering if Myles was already gone.

No, I couldn’t let fear of the unknown control me. I needed to think of this as an adventure.

“Next.”

I whipped around to see the woman behind the counter staring at me. She looked like she’d sucked on lemons for breakfast while she summoned me with a crooked finger. I tried to smile at her, and she glared—not a great start.

“Hi there, I….”

“Passport.”
