The women slid their gaze to Prescott. “You’re brothers?”

“Yeah,” Prescott replied.

“It’s nice to have some eye candy for a change,” said one of the women. “We’ve seen it all and most of it ain’t pretty. You guys police?”

“Nope,” Hawk replied.

“You boys be good,” said the other nurse.

After the brothers moved to a quiet corner of the busy waiting room, Prescott asked, “How are they?”

“They’re in surgery. They got hit from behind, so I didn’t see a thing. When I realized they’d been shot, I was too concerned about them to go after the shooter. Addison took a bullet to her back, up by her shoulder. She was a beast. I gave her my shirt and she held it against the wound until paramedics arrived. Sally took a bullet to the middle of her back and she might’ve banged her head on a car as she hit the ground. She’d passed out, so I focused on her.”

“How you holding up?” Prescott asked.

“Me? I’m fine, but seeing them both take a bullet got to me. Do Mom and Dad have Ethan?”

“Yeah, they’re gonna stay at the house. When I left, Dad was reading him a bedtime story.” Prescott unearthed his phone. “I gotta call them.” He dialed, put the phone on speaker.

His mom answered on the first ring. “What’s happening. Is Nicky with you?”

“I’m here, Mom,” Hawk said. “I’m fine. Addison and Sally are in surgery. They’re gonna be okay.”

Prescott raised his eyebrows. His brother had no way of knowing that. Neither had even come out of surgery, but he knew Hawk didn’t want them to worry.

“I’m relieved to hear that,” she said. “Ethan fell asleep on Dad’s lap. He’s such a sweet little boy. We’re having a slumber party in the family room.”

“Thanks for taking care of him,” Prescott said.

Z entered the ER and beelined over.

“Mom, Addison’s dad just got here,” Prescott said. “I’ll call you when they’re out of surgery.” He ended the call.

“How are they?” Z asked.

After they updated him, Z’s phone rang. “It’s Dakota.” He answered, put phone to ear. “Did you get the word out?” He listened, then said, “I’m with Prescott and Nicholas now. Both women are in surgery.” Z glanced at Hawk’s shirt. “He’s covered in blood, but I think he’s okay.”

“I’m fine,” Hawk said.

Z hung up and eyed both men. “ALPHA is on official lockdown. Nicholas, you’ll be hearing from Cooper.”

“Isn’t that extreme?” Hawk bit out. “When the hell do Ops go into hiding? It’s our job to chase down the criminals, not hide from them.”

“The second you see Addison, you won’t want to leave her side,” Z said. “Knowing you, you’d probably impose your own lockdown. ALPHA’s just saving you from fighting with your strong-willed fiancée, who won’t want to stay locked up either.”

“He’s right,” Prescott said. “We don’t know who’s after you, or why.”

“Nicholas Hawk,” a physician called out.

They made their way over. “I’m Hawk.”

“Addison is out of surgery and asking for you,” said the attending physician. “She’s in a recovery room on the fourth floor.”

“What about my sister, Sally Sagall?” Prescott asked.

The doctor checked with the front desk. “She’s still in surgery, but tell someone at the nurses’ station that you’re waiting to see her. They’ll let you know when she’s been moved to a recovery room.”

They made their way upstairs, stopping at the nurses’ station for Addison’s room number.
