“I’ve got a safe in my office and one in my safe room downstairs. I’ve never had to lock up a gun before.” He glanced around the room. “We’ll keep it in my office safe.”
After filling a glass with water, he handed it to her. She took a few sips.
“Did you get the tag number?”
“Yeah.” She shuddered in a shaky breath.
“Before we do that, let’s make sure you have access to the safe room.” Down the stairs they went.
She stood in front of the scanner. The light turned green.
“Computer, why couldn’t Jacqueline access my safe room earlier?”
“One moment,” the computer replied. “An unidentified individual attempted to enter the safe room at one-eleven pm. Retina scan failed due to excessive motion.”
“I wasn’t my most calm self,” Jack murmured.
He stroked her back. “It’s okay, babe. You’re safe, now.” Placing his hands on her shoulders, he peered into her eyes. “I will not let anything happen to you.”
She nodded. “Thank you.”
In his office, he logged into ALPHA. “Let’s run the tags, then find a phone number to go with that blocked call.”
She rattled it off before collecting her laptop and sitting on the love seat.
“Give me your phone.” He pulled a cord from his desk drawer, connecting her phone to his laptop.
Determination and fury fueled him. He would find the son of a bitch stalking her.
“It’s gonna take a few minutes for the programs to run.” He leaned back in the chair and studied her. She’s not okay.“Going forward, we’ll work together.”
“Please check Ethan,” she said.
He opened the daycare app. “There’s the wild child.” He showed her. “And he’s okay. We’ll pick him up together and I’ll add you to the approved list.”
Her heartfelt smile helped settle him down. “Thank you for trusting me with your child.”
“My child. Still hard to wrap my brain around that.”
She sat back down. “I need to get back to work. Z called me looking for results.”
“Make any progress this morning?”
“I cleared four of the five former Ops,” she said.
“That’s good and bad.”
“I know. It’s not getting us any closer to finding the killer.” She opened her laptop and resumed her search.
He called his assistant, Francis.
“Everything okay?” his assistant asked. “You ran out so fast.”
“All good,” he replied. “I’m going to be working remotely for the rest of the afternoon. I didn’t see any meetings—”
“You’re clear. Artemis stopped by and apologized for blowing up at you. He said he’d be happy to let the in-house marketing team roll out the sensitive skincare campaign.”
That makes no sense. What the hell is TopCon doing for the million and a half?
