Her gaze softened. “Thank you.”

Pausing, he studied her face. She was beautiful, especially after he’d sexed her up good. “I owe you an orgasm.”

“That fuck was my apology for ghosting on you.”

He wanted to kiss her, then ask her to have a drink with him at the bar. But she was hisformerkink partner who was in town for a few days.

Let her go.

An unexpected feeling of loss stayed with him as he entered the bathroom. Shaking off the emotion, he cleaned up and returned to get dressed. She slipped past him and shut the bathroom door.

On went his boxers, pants, and shirt.

As he was buttoning up, she sidled close. “If you want to get together tomorrow night, lemme know. If not, tonight was fun.” To his surprise, she leaned up and kissed his cheek.

His chest warmed.

After stepping into his shoes, he collected her leather duster, held it out for her. After she slipped into it, he pulled out her long hair, collected a handful and tugged. “You look good, Jack.”

Truth was, she was a gorgeous woman. Beyond her looks, there was a strength and a vulnerability to her that captivated him. He was just as intrigued now as he had been all those months ago.

They left the suite, made their way to the first floor. He wanted to ask her what she was doing tomorrow, but he didn’t. They’d never shared anything about themselves. Why ruin a good thing? Better to stay strangers.

The crowded bar had thinned out. Before he could check himself, he asked, “Can I buy you a drink?”

Her eyebrows crowded into her forehead as her eyes grew large. “Uh, no. I don’t want to find out you’re married with three kids and your wife thinks you’re out of town on business.”

“I wouldn’t talk about my wife with you… and I have six kids.”

Her laugh touched a part of him that had died, months ago.

C’mon, man, get it together.

“If I was married and hanging out here without her, then I shouldn’t be married.”

She turned toward him. “Exactly. Should I assume you’re not married, not that it matters.”

“Not married,” he replied. “How ‘bout you and your new life?”

“I was seeing someone casually,” she said as she pushed open the front door and sailed into the night.

“What happened?”

“He wanted to take things to the next level, but I ended it.”

“Cut him at the knees,” he replied.

Her smile sent energy traversing through him.

She said nothing more about it, and they walked in silence to her Jeep. After opening the door, she turned back. “You fuck good. Thanks for meeting me.”

He leaned in and kissed her. One brief peck on her mouth. “Maybe I’ll see you tomorrow night.”

“Yeah, maybe.” Leaning up, she laid a searing kiss on his lips, lingering an extra beat before breaking away. After climbing in, she shut the door.

Damn.

He didn’t want to let her go, but he had to.Better this way, he told himself, as she started the vehicle.
