“Sure,” Providence replied. “Do you want to put your jammies on and we’ll get out sleeping bags?”
“Hurray!” Graham exclaimed. “A sleepover!”
Ethan beelined over to Prescott. “Are we staying here?”
“You can stay here with Graham tonight and I’ll pick you up in the morning.”
Graham pulled up alongside Ethan. “We get to watch a movie and sleep in bags. In the morning, we have pancakes with sayrup!”
“I don’t know that,” Ethan replied.
“Syrup,” Providence translated.
“It’s sugar, buddy,” Prescott said.
“Hurray!” Ethan jumped up and down. “I love sugar!”
Prescott finished his glass of Glenfiddich, thanked Providence and Dakota for a fun evening.
“I’ll walk you out,” Dakota said.
Prescott hugged Providence, offered a high-five to Graham, then ran a hand across Ethan’s back. “Hey, bud, you have fun with Graham, okay. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Ethan wrapped his arms around Prescott’s legs, so Prescott lifted him up and hugged him.
Once outside, Dakota asked, “Where you headed on your night off?”
“Meeting a friend for a drink at Asylum.”
“Rebel’s club?” Dakota asked.
“Yeah.”
Dakota smiled. “I met Providence at Stryker’s old club.”
“The Dungeon?”
“Yeah, and it was intense.” He smiled at the thought. “She was there spying on me. Nothing like sleeping with the enemy.”
Prescott chuffed out a laugh. “Looks like it all worked out for you.”
“Better than I could’ve imagined.” He slapped Prescott on the back. “Once things get back to normal for you, we’ll talk about these missions.”
“Thanks for dinner and for keeping Ethan. I’ll swing by tomorrow around ten.”
“Or later, if you end up having a sleepover of your own,” Dakota replied.
As Prescott headed toward his truck, parked at the curb, Ethan came bolting down the driveway.
“No!” he wailed, then burst into tears.
Dakota swept him into his arms. “What’s wrong, Ethan?”
Providence and Graham hurried outside.
Prescott strode up the driveway. Ethan held out his arms, and Prescott took him from Dakota.
Ethan flung his small arms around Prescott’s neck. “Are you leaving me like Mommy?”
