The door was open. Cooper was on his computer, so Hawk moseyed in. “Hey.”
Cooper, shot him a smile. “Thanks for coming in.”
Hawk sank into the guest chair. “I figured we’d covered everything last week. Is there fallout from the Festival Shooter mission?”
“No,” Cooper replied. “I’ve got a new hire and I think you’d make a great mentor.”
More shit he didn’t have time for. But Hawk never said no to family or close friends. Ever. It was a promise he made to himself years ago. Life was short—too damn short. When they needed him, he was there for them. No questions asked.
Hawk sipped the black coffee.
“You up for it?” Cooper asked.
“When have I ever said no to you?”
“Never,” Cooper replied.
Knock-knock.
Providence Luck, co-lead of ALPHA, stood in the doorway. “Hey, Hawk.”
He tossed her a nod. “How’s it goin’?”
“Never a dull moment.” She walked in, shut the door. “I’m sorry to interrupt.”
“I can step out,” Hawk said.
“No, you’re fine.” She shifted her attention to Cooper. “I just found out an Operative has been seeing someone on our Internet team. They never documented their relationship with HR. Normally, I’d let it slide, but one of them is married.”
“Dammit,” Cooper bit out.
“You wanna follow the rule book or let this slide?” she asked.
“We gotta follow protocol,” Cooper answered.
“Is that code for the firing squad?” Hawk asked, and they both laughed.
“The married one is willing to end things, but the single one isn’t,” Providence continued.
“That’s a problem. The single one can blackmail the married one, for starters,” Cooper explained. “This puts the entire organization at risk.”
Providence tucked her short hair behind an ear. “We’ll have to let one of them go.”
“Agreed.” Cooper sipped his coffee.
“I’m heading into a meeting, so I’ll circle back with you after lunch and we’ll figure it out,” Providence said.
“We can recommend one or both to a different agency,” Cooper suggested.
Providence nodded before casting her attention on Hawk. “Nice job with the Festival Shooter.” She left, closing the door behind her.
Hawk shifted in his chair. “Did you and Danielle document your relationship with HR?”
“Not right away. We needed to figure us out first.”
Hawk got that. Right now, he and Addison were in some bizarre state of limbo. One sexy kiss, one amazing blowjob, and they weren’t even speaking.
Cooper’s desk phone buzzed and he put the call on speaker. “You ready for us?”
