She helped him up, then wrapped two blankets around his shoulders. After grabbing their clothes, she steadied him as they made their way up the upstairs and into the hall bathroom. Once the water had heated, she turned it back to cool and asked him to test it.

He shoved his hand under the shower. “Feels warm.”

He got in and the water pounded him while she studied every inch of him. His fingers were flush with color, but his toes were purple and she worried that he might lose his pinkies.

While he stood there warming up, she got dressed.

“Wiggle your fingers,” she said.

He did.

“Toes,” she said.

He tried, but they were too stiff to move. Over the next several minutes, she continued to raise the heat level, as he could tolerate it.

“I feel better,” he said.

“You ready to come out?”

He wiped the water from his face. “Yeah, baby, I am.”

She inhaled her first calming breath since seeing him on the freezer floor. He turned off the water and stepped out. After wrapping him in two large bath towels, she found a hairdryer that had to be thirty years old.

“Look, an antique,” she said.

His smile was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. Filled with gratitude, and overcome with emotion, tears filled her eyes. Had she stayed at the hospital, he would have died.

Unable to stop the relief, tears slid down her cheeks. He folded her in his arms and held her, close. “I’m okay, baby. You got to me in time and you knew what to do.”

He placed his hands on her cheeks, dipped down and dropped a soft kiss on her lips. “Thank you for saving me.”

She choked back a sob. “Is the freezer door broken from the inside?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh, no, you got locked in.”

“No, I didn’t,” he ground out. “Tommy tased me, locked me in there, and left me to die.”

MARRY ME

Anger coursed through Hawk, but he needed to think this through. Then, exact his revenge, swiftly and thoroughly.

Addison just stared at him. “Your cousin did this to you?”

“Let’s get outta here.”

They killed the lights in the farmhouse. As they made their way to the barn, he clasped her hand. Touching her was a gift he’d never, ever take for granted.

“Do you think he’ll come back here to…” Addison’s voice trailed off.

“Make sure I’m dead?” Hawk bit out. “If he does, he’s gonna freak-the-fuck out when he doesn’t find my frozen body.”

“I hate him so much,” she whispered.

After Hawk unplugged the freezer, he turned out the barn lights. On their way toward their vehicles, he asked, “Did Liv have the baby?”
