POP-POP-POP-POP-POP-POP.
Haqazzii ran down the hall, opened a door, and pulled it shut behind him.
“Confirm that leads to the basement,” she whispered.
Hawk pulled up beside her. “Confirmed.” He pulled a smoke grenade from his belt.
Prescott and Addison did the same. They ran to the door. Hawk opened it. They yanked the pins and threw the grenades down the stairs.
“There’s an exit. I’m going outside to stop him.” Hawk took off in a full-on run.
“I’ll stay here,” Prescott said.
“I’m going with Hawk.” Addison ran after him, wishing he’d waited for her.
She saw him vanish outside and pushed harder to catch up. When she did, he was readying his shot at the cellar door.
She hurried over, breathing hard.
The door flew open, Haqazzii emerged wearing a gas mask and cradling his assault rifle. She and Hawk opened fire.
POP-POP-POP-POP-POP-POP-POP-POP-POP-POP-POP-POP-POP-POP.
Haqazzii dropped.
“On my way out,” Prescott exclaimed. “He’s got the place wired to blow.”
“Oh, fuck,” Hawk bit out.
She and Hawk sprinted toward the front gate. As they rounded the corner of the building, Prescott was thirty feet ahead of them.
KABOOM!
An explosion in the back of the building had them running full-out toward the compound exit. Addison started falling behind, both men able to run so much faster than her. Hawk stopped and grabbed her hand as she ran past, then continued running.
KABOOM!
“You want me to carry you?” Hawk blurted between breaths.
“I got this,” she replied, pushing harder than she’d ever run.
KABOOM!
Prescott pulled the fence gate open as they raced through it.
KABOOM! KABOOM! KABOOM! KABOOM!
The building erupted in a series of explosions.
“Don’t stop,” Hawk said as sections of the building came flying over the fence, crashing around them.
They continued racing toward the open field. Addison’s lungs burned, her thighs hurt, she couldn’t catch her breath, as debris continued falling all around them. Beyond pushing as hard as they could, they were jumping and leaping over downed pieces of the building.
“Jesus,” Prescott murmured, the comm catching his voice. “What the hell!”
“I gotta slow down,” Addison gasped out.
