“Are you in the parking lot?” Addison asked.

“It’s a nice night,” Z replied, “so I parked at the end of the street.”

“Feels good to breathe fresh air, doesn’t it?” Hawk asked. “You gotta get out of that shit hole of an office.”

Z chuckled “I do need to get out more.”

“Poker, next month,” Hawk said.

While they waited for the SUV, Hawk pulled up the videos from the vehicle. Other than valets parking cars nearby, no one got near it, and the valet didn’t leave anything inside.

“This is how I’ve programmed the entire fleet,” Hawk said. “I would have gotten an alert if anyone touched it, set something under it, or left something inside. It’s clear.”

“I admit, I’m paranoid when it comes to Addison, especially with everything going on,” Z said.

The valet drove up. Hawk tipped him, then opened the rear door for Addison. Once she was inside, he shot her wink before shutting it. As he walked around, Z got into the front passenger seat.

Hawk drove out and headed down the quiet side street, lined with parked cars.

“I’m the last one on the right.” Z pulled out his key fob. “It came with remote start.” He pressed the button.

KABOOM!!!

Z’s car exploded, the sound reverberating through them while shards of glass from the Bentley’s windows sprayed in every direction.

Hawk slammed on the brakes. “Hold on.” He threw the SUV in reverse, glanced over his shoulder, and hit the gas. They flew backward. He slammed on the breaks again, drifted through a one-eighty, and floored it in the opposite direction.

As they sped past the restaurant, Hawk asked, “Addison, are you okay?”

“Fine,” she replied. “Dad?”

“What the hell!” Z exclaimed. “I cannot fucking believe it.”

“We’re going to the black site,” Hawk bit out. “Addison, call Cooper.”

“No,” Z blurted. “I’ll call Sin.”

Z made a call, put the phone to his ear. “I’m being taken to the safe house. Yes, the black site. My car was bombed.” He listened. “Remote start. I was leaving Carole Jean’s with Addison and Hawk.” More listening. “I think Addison was the target. What do you meanlockdown? Are you out of your fucking mind!” Z hung up.

Silence.

“Well, that pisses me off,” Z said.

“What did he say?” Hawk asked.

“I have to stay at the safe house, tonight,” Z replied through gritted teeth. “Addison, I’m concerned that explosion was meant for you. I want you and Hawk to stay there with me.”

“No,” Addison said. “No way.”

“Don’t argue,” Z pushed back. “We could have been killed.”

Silence.

As soon as they turned off Route 7, Hawk pulled over. “I’m checking for tails.”

When he felt confident they weren’t being followed, Hawk continued to the black site.

Once the security cameras cleared them for entrance into the building, they stepped inside.
