He swung open the door to find Tommy standing there.

Tommy peered around Hawk. “Can I come in?”

Pushing past him, Hawk bolted down the hall.

“Come in,” Cooper said.

“Oh, sorry,” Tommy said. “I didn’t know you were in a meeting. I can come back.”

“What do you need?” Cooper asked.

“Hawk told me the bad news,” Tommy began. “I’m bummed he’s not my mentor, but I wanted to see if Addison could do it.”

Cooper shifted his gaze to her. She sat there stone-faced. Hopefully, Cooper knew her well enough to pick up on her non-verbal cues.

“Addison’s not here every day. I’ll find someone for you. Give me a few days to circle back.”

Tommy peered over at her, but she stayed silent.

“Is that it?” Cooper asked Tommy.

“Oh, yeah.” Tommy still hadn’t moved.

“Can you shut the door on your way out?” Cooper asked.

When Tommy left, Cooper asked Addison about Hawk’s mental state.

“He blames himself for Barry’s death,” Addison replied.

“I know,” Cooper replied. “He’s not going to tell me if anything’s wrong, but I wanted to make sure he’s up for this mission.”

“Why wouldn’t he be?” Addison asked.

“You said it. He feels responsible for Barry’s death. You’ve been with him, so I need confirmation that he’s mentally ready. Haqazzii is ruthless. Each of you has to be at the top of your game.”

“Hawk is up for this mission. And so am I.”

Hawk strode into Hawk Security and stopped. There had to be thirty employees milling in the lobby.

“We heard what happened,” one of them said.

“What are we supposed to tell our customers?” asked another.

“Boss man, we’re getting slammed with calls,” said one of his receptionists. “Customers are concerned their cameras were activated without their knowledge.”

“We’ll get through this,” Hawk said to his staff before addressing his senior receptionist. “Send an email to the exec team, managers, and account managers. Meeting in the big conference room, forty-five minutes.”

The receptionist nodded. “I’m on it.”

“Where’s Mags?” he asked.

No one had seen her.

Skipping the elevator, angry energy propelled him upstairs. On the top floor, he stopped at Mags’s office. She wasn’t there. He called her cell.
