“Then, stop talking, take me upstairs, and fuck me.”

“Come home with me.”

This can’t be happening.“Why?”

“It’s more intimate. You can stay.”

“What? All night?”

“We can go for a run in the morning. I’ll make you breakfast.”

Her head was spinning. She didn’t do overnights. No way was she gonna stay at his place, then spend the day with him. “I… I can’t.”

“I’m not asking for anything, except to hang with you,” he continued. “I’ve made you food plenty of times. What’s the big deal?”

“Seriously? Where would I sleep? Would we have sex again?”

A sadness ghosted over his face. She’d insulted him. Didn’t mean to do that, but she was kind of freaking out here. She didn’t do sleepovers. She did hookups and role plays. That’s it.

“Is that my only choice?” she asked.

“Or your place,” he replied. “We can go there.”

The walls were closing in, her hands turned clammy. Her heart was pounding so fast, she thought she’d pass out. Where was this coming from? Everything had been great between them… for years. She should never have given him that blowjob. She’d wanted to prove a point, but it had backfired in the absolute worst way.

“My Granddad’s still in the hospital,” he continued. “I’m swinging by tomorrow. I’m sure he and Grandmom would love to see you.”

He can’t be for real.

“I can’t do this. I thought hooking up with you would easy. You don’t do relationships. Neither do I.” She pushed off the stool. “I gotta go. I’ll see you at HQ.”

“Yo, babe, Tommy’s gonna be there.”

“I don’t give a fuck about Tommy and, at the moment, I don’t give a fuck about you either.”

PREPPING FOR THE MISSION

Saturday night, eleven thirty.

Hawk was the first to arrive at ALPHA. He drove around back, parked the SUV near the door, and made his way inside. The place was quiet. He dropped his computer bag on the conference table and paired his laptop so he could project the images on the drop-down screen. Then, he pulled up the blueprint of the building, along with photos of the men they were taking out.

He walked into the supply room, pulled six comms from the shelf and made his way back to the conference room. Normally chill, he was on edge. Not about the mission. About Addison. He hadn’t been able to shake her from his thoughts all day.

Despite the run, the weight lifting, and the attempt to do a mindful meditation, he fucking hated that she’d stormed out on him. He was concerned the tension would prevent them from working as a team. If anyone detected the friction between them, it might affect the outcome. He’d never been in this situation before, but he had to move past it… for now.

He turned his attention to the screen and studied the faces of the criminals. There was added pressure when he was leading a teamandflying the helo. Plus, he had to keep an eye out for Tommy.

Earlier in the day, Addison had texted him. “Liv and Jericho are managing the club for us tonight.”

“Thanks for taking care of that,” he’d replied. “I’m getting to HQ early.”

She never responded to that text.

The mission, as far as missions went, was straightforward. Fly to the location, surprise the fugitives, eliminate them, fly back.

Addison walked in. The divot between her eyebrows was deeper than usual.
