“Enjoying you, as always,” he grins.

“This was a good day,” I tell him.

“It was. Kenneth was happy, and it was nice to see everyone.”

“Just think, next month Kennedy turns five, and we get to do it all over again.”

“Don’t forget your birthday, little momma. Yours is in a week.”

“If everything goes according to schedule, we’ll be spending my birthday in the hospital waiting for this little bundle to arrive,” I say, patting my belly.

“I thought of that, and that’s why I decided to give you your gift a little early.”

“What? You already bought me something?” I ask.

“Of course, I did. Have I ever once forgotten a birthday or anniversary ever?”

“You have not. You hold a perfect record.”

“Here you go, baby,” he says, sliding a small box wrapped in gold paper in front of me.

“Thank you, Kent. This is so unexpected,” I tell him, taking the box in my hand.

“Well, it’s not a bomb. Stop inspecting it and open it,” he teases.

I unwrap the box and open it. Inside is a gold chain holding a diamond heart.

“Oh, it’s beautiful. Thank you. Can you put it on me, please?”

“With pleasure,” he says and removes the necklace from the box. I hold up my hair to allow him to close the clasp on my neck.

I turn to him and ask, “How does it look?”

“It's beautiful but nothing shines as brightly as you,” he says. “Advance happy birthday, little girl.”

“I’ve been thinking about the new baby and all the names we’ve been tossing around.”

“Have you? Have you narrowed things down?”

“Well, I was thinking… We know it’s a girl, so what if we name her after my mother?”

He looks at me and says, “I’m so sorry, baby. In all this time, I don’t think I’ve ever once asked your mother’s name.”

“Her name was Katherine,” I tell him, tears pricking my eyes.

“Katherine. I think that’s a perfect name.”

The End.
