“See you in ten.”
THIRTY-FOUR
ACE
I meant what I said.I’m at Ruby’s doorstep ten minutes later, my fist raised and ready to knock when the door swings open and Ruby’s head pops out. She looks left, then right. Then left again before she grabs my hand and drags me inside, slamming the door behind me.
“What the—”
“We have to be careful,” she says, interrupting me. “Come on.”
Without waiting, she heads toward the short hall that leads to her bedroom and I trail after her like a dutiful dog because I’m not a stupid man. Where that sexy woman goes, I will follow, especially when it involves privacy and a bed.
She shuts the door and locks it, turning to face me, and that’s when I can really take her in. And sweet Jesus, she’s worth staring at for a moment because damn.
Her hair is in a sloppy bun on top of her head and she has no makeup on save her lips, which are coated in the faintest sheen. She’s got on some thin black shorts that are cut so high I bet her ass cheeks hang out of them when she bends over and one of her infamous T-shirts.
This one is pale blue and cropped, showing off her toned stomach, and it has a saying across the front of it in dark blue lettering.
YOU WISH.
“Ah, Red. Your shirt.” My gaze lingers on the words, how they track across her tits perfectly, just like the last one. “I don’t have to wish.”
She frowns. “What do you mean?”
“All of my wishes have already come true.” I grab her hand and yank her to me, her body colliding with mine, sparks igniting between us. “Now that I’m here.”
She rolls her eyes. “Give me a break, Acey Baby.”
“You really going to keep that up?” I raise my brows.
Ruby is grinning, she’s so pleased with herself. “Hmm, definitely. That’s your name in my phone now.”
“No fucking way.”
“I’m serious.”
“You’re fucking with me.”
She shakes her head. “I’m not. Hold on.” She swipes her phone off her nightstand and opens it, tapping at the screen until she turns it and shows it to me.
There’s my phone number listed in her contacts, accompanied by the nameAcey Baby.
“That sucks, Red,” I groan, shaking my head.
“I think it’s cute.” She deposits her phone on her nightstand before she turns to me, her hands on her hips and looking sassy as hell while she contemplates me. “This is a terrible idea, by the way.”
“What is?”
“The two of us. Together.” She shakes her head. “Right now. I could lose my job, Ace.”
The seriousness of her tone, the way she’s looking at me…shit.
I feel bad.
Standing up straighter, I glance over at the door, knowing I should walk out. Leave her alone for the next couple of months. Anything worth having is worth waiting for, isn’t that how the saying goes? Ruby’s worth it.
I know she is.
