Suppressing a giggle, she maintained her innocent facade. “Oh my god, Logan, your T-shirt’s soaking, you'd better take it off,” she suggested, her eyes twinkling with mischief. Holding her breath, she watched as he raised his arms, peeling off the wet shirt and tossing it aside in a careless heap. With a playful grin, she pointed out tiny specks on his shorts. “And your shorts, too. Look!” she exclaimed, gesturing to some imaginary stains.

He glanced down, playing along. “Where?”

“Right there, and there,” she replied, indicating the imagined spots. “I think you should definitely take them off.” Her heart raced as anticipation filled the air. His eyes locked with hers, full of desire and a playful challenge.

“You've been a very naughty girl, Louisa,” he whispered, his voice laced with desire as he nipped at her earlobe.

“Have I?” she whispered back, hers dripping with anticipation.

“You know you have,” he murmured, a mischievous glint dancing in his eyes. “And you know what happens to naughty girls, don't you?”

She leaned in, her voice barely a whisper. “Show me,” she breathed, her desire growing stronger.

A playful sparkle lit up Logan's eyes as he whispered, “This.” In a swift motion, he swept her up into his arms. Joyous laughter escaped her lips as he leapt off the pool's edge, plunging them both beneath the surface with a resounding splash.

Epilogue

Anxiety filled the room, saturating the surroundings as Lou's restless energy manifested itself in her incessant pacing. Time stretched endlessly, magnifying the weight of anticipation that hung in the air. The steady rhythm of the ticking clock echoed with an ominous reminder, each passing second amplifying the mounting tension. Her thoughts became entangled in a web of daunting scenarios, stirring unease and setting her nerves on edge.

Her gaze flicked nervously to the clock. Two twenty-five. A knot tightened in her stomach as the impending arrival loomed in her thoughts. Responsibility pressing heavily on her mind.

Taking on another child alongside the responsibility of fostering two brothers seemed like an enormous challenge. The recent car accident involving their mother left their family in a fragile state, while their father's absence only added to the complexity. She couldn't help but feel a mixture of doubt and concern as she contemplated the task ahead. The wellbeing of the two boys, already impacted by their mother's accident, was now intertwined with the arrival of another child. The weight of responsibility pressed down on her as she tried to prepare herself for the uncertainties and challenges she knew lay ahead.

When Carmen, a local social worker, had reached out to them about Lola, a five-year-old girl in need of an emergency placement because of her mother's abusive partner, Lou found herself engulfed in a storm of apprehension. Already balancing the responsibilities of caring for Rafael and Javier, and running their bustling holiday let business, the idea of adding another child to the equation seemed overwhelming. But Logan had brushed aside her concerns and readily agreed to take Lola in.

Dani’s impending departure also cast a heaviness on Lou's heart. She wasn't simply moving to a new place, but embarking on a whole new chapter in an unfamiliar country. She tried to make a conscious effort not to dwell on the separation, finding solace in the knowledge that Dani had repeatedly displayed maturity and resilience. In moments of crisis, Dani had taken charge while Lou had sometimes struggled to keep herself together. Lou realised that maybe her worry stemmed more from her own uncertainties about navigating life without Dani, rather than doubting Dani's ability to thrive independently.

“Hola,” Carmen called cheerfully from the back porch.

“Hola,” Lou replied, springing into action. “Come in, come in.” Lost in her thoughts, she hadn't even heard Carmen's car outside. It was too late to back out now.

Lou's brow furrowed with confusion as she noticed Carmen's solitary arrival. Her eyes searched for Lola, silently questioning her absence. And then, there she was, peeking out from behind Carmen's legs. Carmen spoke to the little girl in Spanish, but Lola shook her head. Lou felt a pang of worry. Where were Logan and Dani, who were both fluent in Spanish, when you needed them?

“I asked her if she wanted to say hello,” Carmen explained.

“And she said no,” Lou replied, intuitively grasping the meaning without needing any Spanish language skills. The weight of the moment descended upon her, uncertainty swirling within her.

“She's just shy,” Carmen explained, her voice gentle and reassuring. “I've already told her about Rafael and Javier.” Lou nodded, the gravity of the situation sinking in as she absorbed Carmen's words. “Is Logan around? There are a few things I'd like to go over with both of you,” Carmen asked, her gaze shifting towards Lola. Despite the language barrier, Lou had a sense that Lola would recognise her name and comprehend the nature of their conversation.

A football bounced in through the open door and the kitchen came alive with the sound of animated chatter. She couldn't help but smile at the familiar chaos the boys brought with them. Logan's arrival added a burst of energy, his warm greetings resonating through the room.

“Talk of the devil,” Lou quipped, her voice laced with amusement.

“Hola, Carmen! Great to see you,” he greeted with enthusiasm.

Peeking out from behind Carmen's legs, Lola timidly captured everyone's attention. The boys' chatter subsided, curiosity shining in their eyes.

“We were just about to have some ice cream,” Logan announced, his words met with eager anticipation.

“Remember to wash your hands first,” Lou reminded the boys.

As they obediently headed to the bathroom, Logan knelt down, positioning himself at Lola's eye level. “Hola,” he greeted gently, before speaking to her softly in Spanish.

Lola's eyes met Logan's, and with a barely perceptible smile, she acknowledged his presence.

Watching him retrieve an ice cream lollipop from the freezer before unwrapping it and passing it to Lola made Lou feel like her heart would burst.

The boys returned, their excitement palpable as they spotted Logan on the floor. In a burst of energy, they playfully leapt onto him, sending all three of them crashing to the floor, rolling around, filling the room with shrieks of laughter.

A soft chuckle escaped from behind Carmen, who exchanged a knowing smile with Lou.

At that moment, all of Lou’s worries melted away. Her hand flew to her chest. She could not love this man any more than she did right now.

“Family is not defined by our genes, it is built and maintained through love.”
