“Mo grá. Where are you?” I managed to put more energy into my voice than I felt. My mate needed me. I willed the strength back in my body for her.
“If you want to see your precious mate again—”
My blood heated at the sound of a male on the phone instead of my Cliona. I forced my body into a sitting position and put it on speaker so the others could hear.
“Who is this?” I interrupted him.
The others straightened their spines in rapt attention.
“I was about to tell you before you rudely interrupted me, Patty.” He sounded irritated and then I realized who it was. Warren. “If you want to see Cliona again, your precious mate, then you will do exactly as I say. Or she will die.”
Chapter 19
“You incompetent swine! I cannot believe you couldn’t get her off the island.” A high-pitch shrill sounding feminine voice interrupted the silence in my head.
“I been tryin’ fer weeks. I can’t break the bloody feckin’ wards. I knocked the bitch out an’ Patrick’s on his way. He’ll come for the lass. An’ he won’t risk her by bringin’ anyone else.”
Patrick? My Patrick? My thoughts were coming about as fast as swimming in molasses. I had apparently been knocked out harder than I thought.
“You can’t be sure of that. I knew I should have found someone more worthy for this job.” The feminine voice huffed and let out a deep sigh. “As soon as he gets there, you better open the portal for me.”
“If I don’t see Kady come through first, I’ll kill ya before ya get a chance to see yer precious feckin’ Patrick.”
Warren. That was Warren’s voice.
Shit.
I blinked my eyes open and took in my surroundings. It was cold. I felt the stone bite into my bones. Trying to make as little noise as possible, I turned my head to see the rest of what looked to be a dark cavern. I needed to learn more about what the fuck was going on. I couldn’t see very well as there were only a few faerie lights strung around. This must have been a cave we had used in the past as part of the HOMES project, but no one would come up here to check during the Samhain Festival.
“You’ll get Kady, you pathetic swine.”
Who was Kady? What were Warren and the other woman talking about?
My brain was so foggy I tried to remember what happened.
Then it hit me.
Lennox.
Dom.
Oh no, little Gioia.
Fuck.
“I’m endin’ this call. The lass’ll be up soon, so be ready. I want my sister back and ya will deliver, or I’ll make ya regret it for the rest of yer miserable existence, Orla.”
I heard a smashing sound against the cave wall and figured he threw the phone against it.
“Feckin’ cunt,” Warren muttered. I didn’t bother hiding. I sat up slowly. I felt a sharp pain in my neck and touched it, wincing at the bruised flesh. Unable to stop myself, I hitched a breath at the pain. “Oh good, you’re awake,” Warren called, and I heard him walk from around a corner in the cave toward me.
I looked toward the sound of his voice and saw his big fae body pacing, wearing a path in the dirt floor of the alcove we were in. He somehow turned the lights up, so everything was visible now. His long red hair was pulled back in a braid down the middle of his back, and he was dressed like he was going to war in all black with pockets everywhere. His bow was on his back and his boots were laced tight.
“Where are we?” I asked, my voice sounding a bit raspy. There was a purplish dawn-colored light seeping in through the cave entrance, so I knew I had been out most of the night.
“We’re up in the pass, lass. A bit higher than ya might normally venture, but we’re safe for now.” He sat down on the floor next to me and rubbed his temples. “I’m honestly sorry I had to involve ya in this, Cliona. But that feckin’ bitch has my sister, and there’s not anything I’d do to get her back.”
“Kady?” I remembered the name. “Who has her?”
