“Order your drink first,” she demanded.
“I don’t want a drink.”
“Too bad, you need to buy something, you big lumberjack, so I don’t go out of business.”
“What?” I asked. Folks didn’t go out of business in Haven Pass.
“If you don’t pick, I’ll make whatever I think you’d like.”
“Fine with me.” I didn’t care for coffee.
She stepped away and started messing with the machines that looked like they were steaming something. She walked back with a red mug that had The Evil Dead written on it and zombies walking around the sides.
I let out a giant belly laugh at the sight and grinned at Lennox. She was beaming. “It’s great, isn’t it?”
“It really is. Did you get this for me?” No one had gotten me anything in… too long.
“Of course, you’re going to be my brother-in-law basically.”
My heart froze in my chest.Brother-in-law?Did she mean Cliona was ready to officially mate me? Could she consider tying herself to me?
“Slow down there, Patty.” She held her palms up toward me, motioning for me to calm down. “I just meant you are dating my friend. I know she really likes you, so it was just a comment.”
I nodded. Of course, she hadn’t been serious.
“That’s actually why I am here.” She quirked a brow at my words. “I need to share some things about me with Cliona tonight. I’m not sure how she’s going to respond. Guillermo told me to come to you so you would help me with the Schmidt defense.”
Five painfully long seconds passed as the little pink-haired female stared up at me. Then, unexpectedly, she burst out into laughter.
“I don’t understand what is so funny.”
She bent over behind her counter to put her hands on her knees, wheezing in air from the laughter. “The Schmidt defense.” I managed to hear between giggles. “We’ve all used it but didn’t have a name for it until now.”
I rolled my eyes. “Do you have something to help me, or not?”
She composed herself, just barely, and sorted through some of her cabinets. “I imagine he meant for you to have some of my secret stash.”
Secret stash? Of what? This was more confusing than anything.
She stood back up and placed a little baggie on the counter with what looked like tiny cookies in it. Lennox didn’t say anything, simply looked at the bag, then back to me, and then pushed it toward me.
“What’s this?”
“Cat treats, you idiot. It’s a Schmidt bribe to get you in his good favor.”
I scoffed. “I don’t need treats. Cats love me.”
It was Lennox’s turn to scoff. “You haven’t met Schmidt yet.” She gave me a death glare. “It’s only because you are going out of your way to prep for meeting Schmidt that I won’t grill you about what you have to tell her. And the fact Guillermo sent you here, so he obviously knows.” I nodded to confirm her suspicions.
The door chimed and Lennox grinned.
“Patrick?” The most beautiful voice filtered through the noise of the coffee shop. I turned to see my mate walk in wearing a pair of fishnet leggings in her signature black combat boots. She had on a long-sleeved dark gray dress that hugged her curves in a way that should have been illegal. I had a fae urge to cover her up from any other eyes. She was mine. But I suppressed it like I did a lot of my baser needs since moving here. I couldn’t have anyone thinking I didn’t belong here.
“Mo grá,” I muttered as I brought her in for a hug. I inhaled her patchouli scent and felt my cock harden immediately. She tensed in my grip and pulled away, glancing slowly at my crotch.
“It really doesn’t take much for you, does it?” Her green eyes sparkled deviously. She was teasing me.
“When you are near, it does not.” I grabbed her closer again, not ready to have her leave my arms. She wrapped her own around my back and we stood there too long for a public setting, but I didn’t care.
