Fuuuuuck.
This wasn’t good.
My entire body ached in a way I hadn’t felt in too long. I couldn’t even find the energy to open my eyes, so I sat and let my body decide when it was ready.
“She’s been holding it for too long.” I recognized Anya’s, or as most knew her, Dr. Borisyuk’s voice and felt like groaning.
She was Gran’s best friend, and I knew she meant well, but she was a pain in the ass when it came to meddling in my business. Even if she was right. I was avoiding her after she and Guille had tried to intervene and demand I form a coven a few months back.
Anya needed to mind her own business.
I could never tell her that to her face though. Since she would smack me. It’d be a love tap, but I still wasn’t in the business of being slapped.
“We already knew that.”
Great, Guillermo is here too.
“Holding what in?” The deep baritone of Patrick’s voice wrapped around my body and calmed me instantly. His voice was better than any medicine. Could you bottle a voice and use it to treat any affliction?
Wait, why am I here? What happened?
“She needs to be the one to tell you, my friend,” Guillermo answered him, and even though I was confused, I appreciated him for that.
“If something is wrong with my mate, then you need to tell me now,” Patrick said.
His mate?
What?
“Mate?” Anya scoffed and started to chuckle. “You fae were always so quick to claim someone.”
“What does that mean?” Patrick near snarled.
“You know exactly what it means, you brute.”
I imagined Anya’s smaller frame standing up to the hulking fae that Patrick was. He would be a fool not to cower to her though, despite her being small in stature, she could tear anyone a new asshole who crossed her. “You don’t even know the girl, and you are already calling her your mate?”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Yeah, yeah, her scent calls to you,” she said in a mocking way. “She is your one and only. You’ve been waiting for her forever.” Anya scoffed again, and I knew she was waving her hands dismissively. “Bunch of??????if you ask me.”
I hadn’t heard Anya slip into any Russian for a while, so she must have been riled up.
“No one did ask you, Anya,” Lennox chimed in.
I felt a small hand squeeze my own and knew it was my friend. She probably knew I was awake when my breathing changed but didn’t say anything. I knew I loved her for a reason.
“Bryg would say the same, and you all know it.”
Hearing my gran’s name had me blinking my eyes. I turned and saw Lennox sitting next to me, her eyes rimmed in red as if she’d been crying.
“Thank fuck, babe. Don’t do that shit to me again,” she muttered and placed her forehead to mine.
“I’ll do my best.” My voice cracked and sounded like I hadn’t drunk any water for days. “What happened?”
“You were poisoned, dear,” Anya explained, and I groaned. “It was powerful enough to knock you on your ass but wasn’t a lethal dose.”
“Close enough to one,” Patrick mumbled as if he disagreed with her diagnosis.
