“I’m not accustomed to alpha nonsense. I can’t help but question it. I sort of feel like I’m losing my mind.”
“If it helps, from what I know about alphas, that seems normal.”
Satisfied that he was calm, I pulled away, though Kit immediately grabbed my hand, keeping me close to his side as we headed past the closed shops to my quiet street.
“I’m still annoyed with you,” I said conversationally.
“I know.”
“Good.”
Kit followed me as I turned onto the path leading up to my freshly scentmarked stoop, maintaining his hold on my hand which made unlocking the door difficult, but he was clearly feeling edgy, so I let it slide.I was too accommodating for my own good, I thought to myself.
“I’m guessing that alpha hasn’t been back?” Kit asked gruffly, following me into the entryway, his hand still superglued to mine.
“You’re coming in, are you?” I asked wryly.
He didn’t answer, just closed the door behind him and kept holding onto me. I dragged him up the stairs, letting us into my flat where he finally released his hold on me, the lock clicking into place behind us while I flicked on the lights.
“The alpha,” Kit prompted, crossing his arms over his chest. “I’ve been by most days and haven’t picked up his scent. Has he been back?”
“Not yet.” I busied myself taking off my jacket and shoes, giving Kit plenty of opportunity to excuse himself now that I was back behind my own four walls and he’d done his perceived duty. “He did send a message, but I ignored it.”
“What kind of message?”
“Something about dinner, I don’t know. I blocked him.”
Much to my dad’s chagrin. I was going to get it in the neck from him at Nana’s birthday party.
Kit paced the few steps between the front door and the dining table, not looking as though he was in a rush to leave.
“Do you want a cup of tea?”
“No, I don’t want a cup of tea, Margot. I want to have a fucking word with this alpha who keeps bothering you.”
I filled up the kettle, flicking it on and pulling out two cups.
“I’ll make you a cup of tea.”
Kit made a grumbling sound. “I actually do want a cup of tea. And I want to talk to that alpha. Why don’t you give me his number? I’ll tell him to fuck off.”
“That might make it seem like I was actually bothered about it.”
“Well,I’mactually bothered about it.”
“Yes, I see that. And I suppose, if Jimmy has stopped by since his first visit, he’d have picked up your scent here and your irritation wouldn’t be totally unwarranted in his eyes,” I mused. “That is the kind of thing alphas read into.”
Kit perked up. “So you will let me have a word with him?”
“No, I deleted the message, so I don’t have his number. And even if I did… still no.”
Kit immediately deflated, resuming his pacing.
“I don’t know why this is bothering you,” I pointed out, giving the tea a moment to steep. “I’m a nefarious trickster omega, out to ensnare you with my gold-star vagina.”
“You know I regret saying that,” Kit groused, finally ceasing wearing a path into my floorboards to sit down at the table as I set down the tea and grabbed the milk for him to add his own. “I know you’re not trying to entrap me. I think we both know that you’d be the one getting a raw deal if you were. Of the two of us, you’re the catch.”
Kit added an ungodly amount of milk, turning his tea a pale shade of tan at best.I guess nobody’s perfect.
