She believed—whether it was their main vampire or his Scottish lackey—that Sir Gordon was right.

Their local vampire was with the film crew now.

And he was happy to put on a costume—a cape.

“We need to meet with Detective Robertson and our French and English counterparts,” Mason told him. “But we thank you. Sincerely.”

“Ah, well, ’tis a pleasure to meet such a lovely lass and fine sturdy lad!” Sir Gordon said. “And it will be my pleasure as well to direct you to another human monster! You know where to find me.”

His chair scraped as he rose to leave them, bidding them goodbye.

Della thanked him and said goodbye as he walked away.

Mason watched him for a minute and then looked at Della. “He is so right. And we all learn that. Monsters are human.”

She nodded. “We see it too often.”

“And yet, we do this.”

“Because,” she assured him, “it feels so good when we’ve saved the innocent! Right? Seriously.”

He nodded, smiling. “This is just...”

“Yeah,” she agreed. “We need to get moving!”

She hadn’t realized just how much of the cheese and biscuits and meats she had eaten until she looked at the tray as they rose.

Of course, Mason had been dining on all of it, too. She glanced at him.

“Hey, we’re terrible. We always forget to eat. So, hmm, go figure! We ate it all.”

“Did I leave you anything?”

“I think we shared perfectly,” he told her.

He didn’t take her hand this time. He had the tray and returned it to a station where he could dispose of their trash and leave the cutlery. Then they started back on the block toward the hotel with Mason glancing at his watch again.

“We’ll be just on time,” he told her.

“I wonder if Detective Robertson has managed to learn anything.”

“Unless their labs work at miracle speed, I doubt we have much yet,” he said. “But...after having met with Sir Gordon Stewart, I believe whoever and wherever, they play the same game. They seek out popular places and stalk their victims before seizing upon them—either charmingly or through force. So tonight...”

“Euro-American it is!” she said.

“I’m going to check in with Angela,” he told her.

“Maybe we’ll get an idea of what we’re looking for,” she murmured. “Unless—”

“Unless it won’t help us any to find the main guy because he has another would-be creature of the dark working here?” Mason asked.

She shrugged.

“But maybe he is here,” Mason said softly.

“Maybe. Hey, a name would be nice, just to have—even if we have to crawl all over Europe and beyond to find him.”

“Yeah, a name would be nice. I’ll call now,” he said.
